Meet Emmanuel Kenah of Soulsista Art Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmanuel Kenah

Hi Emmanuel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in Cameroon, West Africa, I completed my early education in my home country, where I cultivated a deep appreciation for culture and community. In pursuit of greater opportunities, I moved to the United States to attend the University of Kentucky, earning double majors in Political Science and International Relations. Following this, I attended the Charlotte School of Law, specializing in Entertainment Law, and later completed a master’s degree in Entertainment Business at Full Sail University where I graduated Sum cum laude and as Valedictorian.

After law school, I relocated to Houston, Texas, a move that initially came with significant challenges, which put me in contact with many independent artists. This humbling experience profoundly reshaped my perspective on the Music business which resulted in authoring my book, The New Music Business for Independent Artists and Record Labels (2019). I work in digital marketing and as a legal consultant, assisting nonprofits, artists, and creative organizations.

Over the years, I have played varrying roles in numerous impactful projects, including the Soulsista Art Foundation, where we blend art, social justice, and community empowerment. My journey has fueled my mission to uplift others and create spaces that celebrate resilience and creativity.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey to building a community in Houston has been filled with challenges, each shaping my perspective and approach. These humbling experiences not only gave me a deeper understanding of the importance of community but also fueled my determination to create meaningful connections.

Reaching out to establish partnerships wasn’t easy. Houston is a large, diverse city, and building relationships with individuals and organizations requires persistence and patience. Bridging cultural gaps, finding common goals, and proving my dedication to impactful work meant putting in the time and effort to earn trust and foster collaboration.

Funding has also been a significant hurdle. Turning creative visions into reality often requires resources that aren’t always accessible. Securing grants and sponsorships involved navigating complex application processes, crafting compelling proposals, and demonstrating the impact I wanted to achieve in the community.

Sharing my mission and spreading awareness posed its own challenges. Houston’s creative landscape is vibrant and competitive, and standing out required me to think outside the box. I relied on digital marketing, hosted events, and actively engaged with local audiences to ensure my message resonated.

Despite these struggles, I’ve remained committed to my vision. Every obstacle has taught me valuable lessons and deepened my resolve to foster resilience, creativity, and unity within the Houston community.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always curious and full of energy, constantly exploring new ideas and possibilities. I had a natural inclination for creativity and problem-solving. I was drawn to art, storytelling, and anything that allowed me to express myself and connect with others on a deeper level. At the same time, I was fascinated by how systems work, from politics to culture, and how they shape the world around us.

I loved immersing myself in books, music, and conversations that challenged my perspective and fueled my passion for understanding people and their stories. Whether it was organizing small events, volunteering, or dreaming up big ideas, I’ve always been someone who seeks to build bridges and make an impact. These traits laid the foundation for the work I do today—combining creativity, community, and purpose.
