Today we’d like to introduce you to Erick Sandlin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Erick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I always enjoyed art and painting in school but never thought that I was good at it. In high school and college, I focused on photography. I went to law school and worked for a judge in Austin for a year before moving to Houston to work for Bracewell LLP. During my time in Austin, I randomly picked up some spray paint and a canvas and painted a small abstract painting, but didn’t think much about it. Then, when I moved to Houston I noticed that a lot of attorneys at my firm had great art in their offices and homes, so I decided that I needed something. But, I also noticed that art could be expensive and I was still paying off student loans, so I decided to paint three paintings with spray paint for my house. Friends then started asking me to paint something for them and then I got asked to be in a coffee shop in the neighborhood. From there, I was asked to be in other businesses and eventually got into galleries. I still practice as a full-time attorney but paint outside of work as much as I can. And I still only use spray paint.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve tried to always have fun when I paint and not let the business-side of things stress me out. There have been ups and downs for sure but I enjoy painting as much today as I did when I started. Even if no one else like my work, I would still paint simply for the joy that it brings me.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Erick Sandlin Art – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I create contemporary abstract paintings with spray paint. I do not use brushes but use whatever is laying around my “studio”, which is my backyard. When most people see the paintings, they do not believe that they are made entirely of spray paint.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan to keep painting with spray paint and discovering new techniques to evolve the style of the paintings. I also plan to do more collaboration with other artists to see how my medium can compliment other mediums and creators.
