Meet Erika Gomez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Gomez.

Hi Erika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hello I am Erika Gomez I am a Mother of 2 beautiful boys and a wife. I’ve been married since 2017. I married my high school sweet heart. And started my own photography business.  I always had love for photography. It started back in high school. I always wanted to know more about it, but I never pushed myself to learn because I didn’t think I was “talented” I always thought you had to have something special to be a photographer. So, I never started, and I never thought I would ever be good enough.

Years passed, and I remember scrolling through Instagram seeing all these amazing pictures photographers took. And I just said to myself, “I wish I could do that; I wish I could create beautiful art. I remember when. I had my pictures taken by Vic and Marie Photography I just fell in love with the work, and I knew this is what I wanted to do, But I was just so hard on myself. It took me having a life and death experience to take the chance and do what I always wanted to do photography. My husband got me my first camera back in 2020 it was a canon with a 50mm lens. Oh how I was like a kid in a candy store just taking pictures like crazy! I took pictures of flowers the sky, and my kids. I felt like I wanted to do more than just that. I wanted to make art with my pictures. Took a lot of failed attempts to get it just right. I had to learn a lot of stuff by myself like how to shoot in manual mode and changing camera settings and also how to edit. I remember how it took me 2 hours just do edit one picture. I know how embarrassing. But I didn’t know anything, I had to see a lot of YouTube videos and a lot of practice to get it right.

My husband was my biggest supporter. I feel like he also helped me to get better at what I do. With his honesty, he made me better. I also have to thank Karen Dominguez Photography for the 1:1 editing class back in 2022. She gave me tips and tricks to edit better, and all I can say it had helped me improve a lot. She was really amazing for helping a beginner like me to know the editing process better. I just thank a lot of people who have supported me and keep supporting me. I would not be where I am today if it was not for you. The only thing I can say is We only have one life, and we can’t be afraid to do something because we think we are not good enough to start.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I always was hard on myself because I was not where I wanted to be, but I feel like it’s gotten better as I go. I have met a lot of amazing photographers along the way. And all I can say is that hard work will always pay off and don’t give up.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer, and I specialize in maternity, cuplés, and cake smash what I am most proud of is how much I’ve improved in my photography. And what sets me apart from other. I really don’t know, I never thought of that. I guess I never want to stop learning and trying new things with my photography.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
For the next 5-10 years I hope I work with a lot more people/ photographers and just keep creating beautiful pictures. And just to always be happy with my photography career and my progress.
