Today we’d like to introduce you to Evie Dross.
Evie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2009, after being laid off from my corporate job and working a few temp positions, I realized that my heart was no longer in working in Corporate America. I then decided to use the layoff as an opportunity to venture into entrepreneurship and as a result Evielutions Design was born that same year. Working in the IT field, I always had a passion for design and technology and so starting a Branding company allowed me to put the two together.
Since I was stepping into a slightly new territory with the design aspect, I wanted to get some experience under my belt in that area so I researched local web design companies, went to their contact pages and sent them an email stating I was interesting in an internship – I’d work for free for experience! I finally received a reply back from a company in Humble and started my apprenticeship. It was a great experience as I not only learned the in’s and out’s of the design world but I also learned how I did and didn’t want to run my own business. From there, I joined the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce, started getting my face/name out there and my business took off…the rest is history. It wasn’t easy and it didn’t happen overnight but I’m extremely proud of all the blood, sweat and tears as it resulting in celebrating ten years in business!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was definitely not smooth and still isn’t! There is a different level of dedication, determination and hustle that comes with having your own business as you seem to push harder than if you worked for someone else. It’s easy to say you’re passionate about something and try to make a business out of it but not knowing the backend/business side of things is usually why a business fails. These have been the areas of struggle for us. When you start a business, most people are juggling many hats (accounting, sales, designer, etc…) and that can put a damper on the quality of service/products you offer. So I say as soon as you’re able to afford to…outsource non-revenue generating tasks.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We help businesses not only look undeniably compelling but assist them with being consistent, timeless and profitable thru business branding. We specialize in web development, logo/graphic design and print.
What sets us apart is that we genuinely care about our clients and local community. We take the time to get to know them, their business and goals. We pride ourselves on fully understanding how their business needs to run which allows us to implement website integrations to help them accomplish their goals as well as reduce expenses. We like to think of the websites we develop as an employee without the hassle, payroll and who can handle many of the daily tasks that businesses need.
What were you like growing up?
I was very quiet and loved to read. I was also fascinated with anything technology or mechanical related so if I wasn’t in the garage with my dad as he worked on building his race car from scratch, I was playing games or coding on my commodore computer.
