Meet Eya Floyd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eya Floyd.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in Austin but toggled back and forth between Austin and Arkansas throughout high school. I can’t say I really knew what I wanted to do after graduating but I always enjoyed drawing and painting and just creating things. I eventually went to school for graphic design and then worked in that field for several years. I continued to paint on the side, and in 2006 my friend Eric talked me into showing both our work at my house during the East Austin Studio Tour. I sold my largest painting within five minutes of the door opening. That was unexpected, but it was the first time I started to think about myself as an “artist”.

Please tell us about your art.
I’m a painter. Mostly acrylics but I recently started getting into oils. My favorite description of my art has been that it’s playfully introspective. If people continued to view my art that way I wouldn’t be upset.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I do spend a lot of time alone! But I also like it that way. I get a lot of social interaction through the pop-up events, store drops and seasonal art shows. Somewhere in that mix I’ve made at least one really good artist friend who I can talk to about all the existential problems of the creative mind – Ha! But I would ask, do you really want more than one artist friend? We’re really sensitive and kind of kooky! Go meet a bartender or a funny accountant. Someone who makes you laugh and gives you a different perspective!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
November 10–11 & 17–18 I’ll be showing original paintings (as well as my line of gift items) at Dead End Studio for the East Austin Studio Tour. That’s going to be a great show with a whole group of talented artists in multiple mediums!

If you’re in Austin and want to do some gift shopping, there are three amazing stores that carry my products – Prima Dora on S. Congress, Austin Gift Company on S. Lamar, and A-town on Burnet. I also do The Austin Flea pop-up events in the Spring and Fall, and in December you can find me all month long at the Blue Genie Art Bazaar.

Eya: As your aunt by marriage I am most impressed by your art and what you do to promote and sell it. My favorite, by far, is the knitting sheep! If I had not already designed your MIL her Blue Star Knits logo, I would have recommended the sheep! Our grandson Ezra is mad about art, so I am encouraging him as much as I can. With all the philosophers, theologians and lawyers in the family we need the right brain creatives for some balance.
