Faith, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Vamp Hair Extensions started in my college Dorm Room circa 2015. I always admired women who presented themselves with class from head to toe. One tenet of doing so is having a flawless head of hair and wearing amazing hairstyles. Sadly, when in college, your budget left little room for splurging on beauticians. Thus, I made it my mission to learn how to style and wear my hair in an affordable but presentable manner. I purchased a mannequin head and taught myself how to install weaves. With practice and perseverance, I began learning how to do sew-ins on my own hair and this transitioned to me making my first removable/re-wearable customized wig. My roommate at the time also benefited from my new hobby and became my first client. Once I realized I could help other girls have glowing tresses I decided to branch out and launched Vamp Hair a few years later. Today, I am selling Virgin Hair Extensions and constructing wigs for women of all ages and backgrounds. One thing I pride myself on is that I have kept affordability in tandem with quality and my wigs can testify to these standards! What started off as a way for me to emulate the style and class I saw exuded on campus, became a lucrative and necessary skill for me today. To all the ladies or gentlemen out there wondering what their hobbies can turn in to, I urge you to just get started! You never know what may grow from a talent you picked up.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I enjoy making wigs and talking all things hair, launching a business and building a following has been anything but a smooth road. When I launched Vamp, I was also working as a full-time Graduate Student in the Bio-Medical Sciences, limiting the amount of time I had to devote to the business. Secondly, I was new to the city in which I launched the business and was no longer around the familiar faces I worked with in college. Building loyal clients and a following was a major challenge I faced being a new small business.
In addition to Grad School and new territory, starting a business is a subject of risk, something I was not totally prepared to accept in the beginning. Marketing and consistent advertising also play a huge role in building the awareness of your business. I have definitely learned valuable lessons from venturing out on my own, and also that asking for help is not in any way a negative but shows that you are invested in your business growing and flourishing.
Vamp Hair Extensions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Vamp Hair Extensions is a Houston Based Hair Service. We specialize in Virgin hair of various textures (Straight, Curly, Body Wave) that can be purchased as individual bundles, closures or frontals, or as customized wig units that may be re-worn.
Additionally, Vamp Hair provides Wig Revamping Services, which allows us to restructure formerly worn hair-pieces and return them with life and volume. I believe this service sets Vamp hair apart, we want our clients to know how valuable their purchases are and that they can be used for upwards of 18 months with proper care and maintenance, which we are happy to provide.
I am most proud of the personal bonds we form with our clients and the way in which we get to know the needs of each woman. We consult with every customer prior to purchases so that the level of understanding between the client and Vamp hair is uniform. I also make myself available to answer any questions my client may have and emphasize that I am here for her satisfaction.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my experience in business has been being able to bring this venture to life on my own. I have had this mission for some time and was unable to launch until recently. As I can agree there may not ever be a perfect time to launch, I am proud of myself for going for it even while completing my doctorate degree.
