Today we’d like to introduce you to Farouk Shami.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Farouk. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I came to America in 1965 with $71 in my pocket with the idea of pursuing my Ph.D. in education to respect my father’s wishes. I took a job as a waiter to pay my tuition and while working I met a group of young women who told me they were in beauty school and I was inspired to enroll. As soon as I stepped onto campus I knew I’d never want to do anything else. I was the number one hair colorist in the United States of America and then I developed a severe allergy to the ammonia found in hair color. Doctors told me I would have to find a different profession.
Not one to give up, I studied cosmetic chemistry day and night until I discovered a formula. That’s when Sunglitz ammonia-free color was born. I was the first to ever invent ammonia-free hair color, something that industry people told me would never be possible. I was the first to use silk in hair and skin products when I created the BioSilk Silk Therapy Line. I also invented the first ceramic flat iron, the CHI. Farouk Systems is the leader in our industry in innovation.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been fortunate to have a successful career and I believe that is due to my taking something negative and turning it into a positive, such as my allergy to ammonia. I didn’t stop there. I created products and tools that would be better and safer for our industry and allow hairdressers to earn a living while protecting themselves, the environment and their clients.
As a company devoted to the hairdresser, we are constantly seeking formulations and technologies to improve the lives of stylists and their clients. This will always be a priority.
Farouk Systems – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My team and I are constantly innovating and researching new concepts to incorporate American Innovation into our industry. We launched the first touch screen dryer called the CHI Touch, a cordless mini flat iron and curling iron called the CHI Escape plus a new ammonia-free liquid color system, CHI Shine Shades. The line consists of 65 silk infused shades equipped for permanent, semi, and demi color formulations.
We also just launched the CHI Spin and Curl, our ceramic self-rotating curling iron and the CHI Lava ceramic Iron with volcanic lava. We are the first professional hair care company to partner with a world-famous technology company, LG to advance our existing technology to the next level.
What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
I continue improving the lives of my fellow hairdressers. There is much more that needs to be done to ensure the future of the industry. Better products and tools are a part of it and education is key. We have over 500 partner schools and my goal is to continue to grow that portion of the company. We will continue to innovate. I will always strive to create a better and safer industry.
