Today we’d like to introduce you to Fawn Dellit.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
People always ask me how I got into Floral Design. I don’t really have that cute story where I grew up in a garden watching my mother play with flowers. I grew up playing basketball which took me to the Metropolis of Chadron NE for college. I played basketball there for 4 years and the only flowers I can remember was the orchid collection I started on our ping pong table! After graduating with a Graphic Design Degree, like many I was left wondering what was next. I took a leap and headed to Oregon and went to the Floral Design Institute. Jumping around from City to City I worked for several “mom and pop” flower shops. Which is where I quickly learned my floral design passion was in weddings. I started the company in 2013 after moving from Denver CO, to the huge city of Houston. With a baby in my belly I was at a cross road in my life, and knew it was time to chase my dreams. I started F. Dellit Designs out of my house, meeting brides at coffee shops, designing flowers in my dining room and having a huge walk in cooler in my garage. That only works so long until space was maxed out and I couldn’t stand having the mess of flowers in my house. We are now located in the Westchase area and do over 50 weddings/events a year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t thinking owning your own business is ever a smooth road. I think one of the biggest struggles for us is growth. When to hire more people, when to battle through and make it work with the staff we have. We are so thankful, but, we grew a lot faster than we ever expected. So, a lot of our decisions had to be made on the fly! Also creating a work/life balance can be challenging. When it is your own company you never get to shut it off. I’m always working. With 2 little kids at home, I’ve had to learn how to step away and be there for my family but at the same time run a successful business. Not always easy to do and it’s an ongoing struggle.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the F. Dellit Designs story. Tell us more about the business.
F. Dellit Designs is an event and wedding floral design studio. We specialize in weddings and creating a memorial day for our client. We like taking our client’s ideas and making them come to life and be more than they dreamed. We get to be a part of one of the biggest days of a couple’s lives! Our customer service and attentiveness to our client is what we believe sets us apart. It is such an intimate day for our couples and we want them to feel like they are hiring their friends to be a part of it.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think I’m lucky to be able to do this business in Houston. It is such a great city with so much opportunity. Houston’s wedding industry is also very tight knit, which makes this business less daunting.
