Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicia Johnson.
Felicia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been interested in herbal medicine and natural remedies. My mother and my grandmother were notorious for their home remedies like fresh ginger teas and witch hazel on everything. I was initiated as a priestess in 2005 and I do spiritual readings for people, as well as astrology and numerology charts. I’m also a freelance writer and filmmaker. I believe that creativity and spirituality are completely intertwined; where there is one, you will find the other, and when they are out of balance or blocked in some way, there’s insanity, and we don’t want that.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, it has been challenging trying to run a business as a single mother of three. I’ve had to change course with the business in order to help care for my parents. I’ve had to shut down the shop from time to time in order to take outside jobs. The weather has also not been so kind. Hurricanes and droughts have ruined my garden on more than one occasion, forcing me to start them again from scratch. I will say that the events at the JuJu Shop have been extremely memorable and transformative. The work that I do with people there is very satisfying, and at the end of the day the struggles are worth it.
Please tell us about The JuJu Shop.
The JuJu Shop was conceived in 2007, as an inner city alternative botanica. Most of the city’s botanicas are deep in the southwest and I wanted to offer more fresh herbs. It has since evolved into a healing place, an event space, a mini-market, a kind of magical oasis in the heart of Third Ward Houston. I specialize in spiritual readings and serving as a hostess for related events. We have hosted full moon tea ceremonies, Amazonian medicine rituals, birthday parties, art shows, and pop-up markets. I’m really excited about and totally committed to the work that I do. It has been a necessary part of my life and I’m happy to share this magic with others. Bringing peace to people is no easy feat, but the rewards are a better society.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have so many. I had a great childhood. I was just sharing this one the other day about how I used to have so much fun on the playground, flipping on the monkey bars. One leg up, two legs up, forward flips, backward flips. So much fun. My parents’ friends had a trampoline and I would spend hours jumping on it. I used to ride my bicycle around the block hundreds of times in a day. One of our neighbors had a crab apple tree and one day, I picked a bucket full of them every time I rode past. I spent a lot of time outside, making mud pies and playing with my imaginary friends. Those were the best times.
