Today we’d like to introduce you to Frances Jones-Coleman.
Frances, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started off wanting to be a doctor, an OB/GYN to be exact. After a few attempts at the MCAT and the Medical School process, I realized that I was trying to fit a square in a circle. All the while I was a thriving Health Educator with a local health plan, coordinating and teaching programs for the pregnant population and building community relationships.
After the birth of baby 2 and 3 (yes twins!!!) I decided to become a doula! I literally was in the shower and said ” that’s it! I’m going to be a doula!” After the doula training I began meeting families and doing the supportive work of a doula. After my 1st birth, I realized I had walked into what had been missing from all my coordinating, and teaching for 8 years.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to becoming a doula, has been a season of change and growth! that in some moments have been very uncomfortable, but all for the good.
The hard part about being a doula is being a mom, a wife, and midwifery student. Juggling all 3 can really be a challenge, but I’m thankful for my husband, sister, and close friends for all the support as I’m away supporting families on their birth journey.
