Today we’d like to introduce you to Francisco Mireles.
Francisco, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Francisco Mireles. I was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, I improve my silver-smithing and design skills at ACC’s Jewelry Department while living in Austin TX. I have always been inspired by abstract art, geometrical shapes, and music. Austin’s local artists and art movement sparked my interest in metal-smithing.
I moved to the Houston area 8 years ago. While working in the oil field industry as a CNC machinist I got inspired on making my own designs. Years later I developed the concept, name, logo, type, and art direction that would ultimately come to define D’vora Jewelry.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. In my case, I wasn’t familiar about starting a business. I had my designs ready, but I didn’t know how to start selling them beside the Internet. I wanted to let local people know about my jewelry.
Finally, after a continuous research, I found out about local pop up markets and galleries that helped me promote and exposure my jewelry brand. It has been two years since I started this journey. It hasn’t been easy, but I love what I’m doing and I’m still learning from the obstacles along the road.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
D’vora is a local handcrafted jewelry business. I hand make and design simple, unique, and contemporary jewelry by using Sterling Silver, 14k Gold-filled, natural Gemstones, and some crystals.
I make minimalistic and simple designs by using geometric and asymmetric shapes. I combine different metals in the same piece to give an authentic and unique touch. One of the things that makes me proud and happy is when people recognize my designs or business logo while I’m selling my product on one of the local events. It makes me feel that I’m on a right path.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was always active and creative. Art and music were always my favorites classes. I remember that I always wanted to participate in activities of such classes. I was very curious about how everything worked. I remember splitting my toys apart to see what was inside of them. I used to make “inventions” by putting together different toys parts and electronics that my toys had. When I was about 10 years old I got very interested in music.
Later, I got my first guitar (which I still have). After a few classes and many hours of self-learning, some friends and I decided to make a band. I always had a blast making music. It’s a hobby that I still enjoy.
