Meet Frank Salas of Frank Salas Reflections

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Salas.

Frank, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a full-time musician for eight years, playing guitar for twenty. I traveled all over the country. Eventually, the late nights caught up with me. I was exhausted and decided it was a good time to take a break from the stage life and loud music.

I was raised in a family of artist. I was born in Ensenada, Mexico. Making a living as an artist in my country is not easy and is a thing for dreamers. One day I made the decision to follow my dreams and I moved to this country, the United Sates. I didn’t have any money, I did not speak English, nor did I have any family / friends. It was not easy. On several occasions, I did not have any food to eat or a place to sleep.

After I took a break from music, I wanted to channel that creativity into something new. I picked up a camera for the first time with no clue how to use it. I began spending hours upon hours everyday teaching myself how to play this new instrument. Although, different than the strings on a guitar I began to see how to pull the strings of light and color into a new composition.

Through trial and error and Investing hours of reading I began to dominate the basics. But, something within me kept saying there was more. Something told me there was more. I heard a voice within me say my imagery should evoke emotion the way my music did. It was in that moment when my photography style took on another meaning: capturing feelings, and people’s emotions.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been far from easy. I have had to fight racism, rejection, and jealousy to get where I am. I have learned to stay firm in what I believe and not allow people to take advantage of me. As a business owner, I learned some of this the hard way. I lost parts of myself realizing that not everyone was my “friend”, making bad investments, and poor choices along the way. Eventually I realized each one of these experiences was a piece of a puzzle of a bigger picture I could not see at the time.

I’m sure of who I am and my purpose in God.
