Meet Funke Agunbiade of Sav Mart Beauty Supply in Southwest Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Funke Agunbiade.

Funke, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Black women have been spending hundreds of millions of dollars on hair care. The problem I noticed was that we had lost total control over the industry which serves us. I began to do my research and revealed that out of the 35,000 existing beauty supplies, less than 10% were black-owned. The origin of Sav-Mart Beauty Supply was birthed from the simple premise of this need. Sav-Mart is my second beauty supply venture. My first Beauty Supply was The Hair Boutique Beauty Supply in Pearland Texas. Fast forward through the establishment of my businesses, I have become a wife and mother to four amazing children. My husband and I are business owners and I am in preparation of launching mrs-agunbiade2u.com to share all things beauty and business for other aspiring female entrepreneurs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, the struggles I encountered would definitely be access. I learned there were four central distributors serving a large portion of the beauty supply stores in the country. It was strategically harder for me to get into the business as a new business owner. Through trial and error, I learned through my roadblocks and solidified the proper distributors. I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. If I wouldn’t have experienced those strongholds, I wouldn’t properly be able to advise aspiring entrepreneurs what not to do.

Please tell us about Sav Mart Beauty Supply.
I am a multi-business owner aside from Sav-Mart Beauty Supply. I’m most excited about Sav- Mart Beauty supply. I’m directly a part of enhancing women’s lives from something as little as a surface level to actually providing people with lifelong careers. I can say what sets me apart is being relatable. As a black woman, I know what my customers need and want as opposed to a one size fits all approach.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was working alongside my father in his tax business. I can honestly say that’s where my first love for entrepreneurship was ignited.
