Meet Galaxy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Galaxy.

Galaxy

Hi Galaxy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began writing poetry in college. I was originally a journalist, and after working for a big newspaper, I knew it wasn’t for me. Although I knew I didn’t want to continue with journalism, I missed writing. I decided to take a poetry class to fulfill my desire to keep writing. For extra credit, I was told to visit an open mic. When I got to the open mic, they were doing spoken word which was a mix of poetry and performance. I feel in love. Now, all these years later travel all over the country to compete at poetry competitions, open mics, and feature at special events. I am also in the process of releasing my first poetry book.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a performer has definitely had its ups and downs. First after college, I quit completely. After coming back, my writing wasn’t up to par with the style that people enjoy now so I have to begin writing again. Once I was back on track, Covid happen and everything shut down. During that time, I had to find way to continue doing poetry without the crowd interaction.

Another struggle I deal with is staying motivated in competitions even when you don’t win. If you’re dedicated to competing you have to learn to pick yourself up and keep going.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I perform on all types of stages. I think it’s important to talk about topics that are thought-provoking, entertaining, and educational. I like to talk about things that may be taboo or uncomfortable because giving a voice to the voiceless is very important.

Things that sets me apart from other poets is my performance style and topics. In a lot of competitions, people talk about difficult topic that may pull of judges’ heartstrings and sometimes trigger the audience. Instead of taking that route, I like to perform creative, entertaining, motivational pieces instead. I like that I can win slam without making be uncomfortable.

I’m most proud of competing in my first international slam this year and being ranked in the top half of all women in the world. It was my first big competition, and I did amazing. I’ve also been selected as a Motown Spoken word finalists for their 2023 competition this year.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During covid many performances venues were closed, and crowd interactions was nonexistent. I had to learn how to become a good virtual performer. I also had to find opportunities to still get paid as an artist during these times. Covid helped me become a more flexible performer.
