Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Guajardo and Mercedes Govea.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Mercedes-Galveston Sports Massage was already established as a business when my partner and I purchased it together. We both were looking to expand our horizons from only the spa industry and return to the heart of why we began massage therapy; providing a service to help people heal themselves.
I found a love for massage as a teenager when my mom had developed “frozen shoulder” after a quintuple artery bypass surgery. She had received numerous therapies and had even been recommended an exploratory surgery. Without any formal training, I was able to allow her shoulder to regain full range of motion in an hour of orthopedic style massage. After earning my massage license, I continued to explore holistic healing and eventually discovered orthopedic massage. I began proper training through continued education to eventually specialize and offer it as one of my services.
Genesis-Growing up I was always involved in sports. Gymnastics was my main sport and it didn’t take long for young me to realize how vital massage was to improve my performance. With all the intense training, falls one takes during practice, and need for flexibility I don’t know how I would have managed without a massage here and there to ease my sore muscles. As time went by I would trade massages with team mates, a nice shoulder massage, and became known as the “go to “for massage. That’s when I realized I had a natural born gift for Massage Therapy. I attended Stephen F. Austin State University and graduated with my bachelors in Kinesiology and Minor in Biology. I also obtained my Personal trainer certification while in college. After working as a Personal Trainer for a year I realized It would behoove me to get a Massage License as well. One night while having Dinner with my pastor he asked me the simple question,” What are you planning on doing with your life?” and I responded” I’m looking into Massage Therapy Schools.” As he looked past me he realized he knew this man eating alone who was an owner of a massage therapy school.
My pastor quickly gave me a proper introduction to this man and after talking to him for a few minutes he said” Genesis I feel led by God to give you a full scholarship to my Massage Therapy School. Take your time to think about it, but it will never expire.” It was at that moment that I knew Massage Therapy was what I was meant to do in life. I have to give God the credit for paving that path. I have a passion for helping others feel better and educating them on how to keep their body healthy. It brings be so much joy and pride in what I do every day. Galveston Sports Massage covers all modalities of massage therapy, but we specialize in the needs of sports athletes. Having come from that background myself, I can truly appreciate and navigate what needs to be done to help these athletes receive healing.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road so far has been smooth. We have made efforts in just this short month to get our name out there and try to establish an appropriate clientele that has been looking for the type of work we can provide. As far as struggle, would be that it all happened at a very fast pace. We were eager to get our brand known and start getting our hands out there.

Mercedes-Galveston Sports Massage is geared towards athletes. However, everyone uses their bodies in one form or another, without awareness that causes stressors and thus pain patterns. Orthopedic as well as our therapeutic massage is all very beneficial for alleviating these issues. We welcome anyone looking to recover or improve injuries, athletic or repetitive stress related.
Genesis-Galveston Sports Massage holds a special place in my heart. I love playing sports and being active and have realized injuries and sore muscles occur sometime. Being that I have suffered some of these injuries I can relate to my clients better. I took an intensive Orthopedic Massager class that has revolutionized the way I perform massage therapy. I would call it the cutting edge of massage therapy.
I have so much more to offer than my regular massage techniques such as, myofascial release, PNF stretching, multidirectional friction, eccentric scar tissue alignment. One of the most fascinating techniques is the arthrokinetics compression /decompression followed by stretch to break up adhesion in the joint cavity and to allow the body to realign itself. These techniques are pain free, relaxing, and leaves you feeling amazed. It goes against the old way of thinking” No Pain No Gain,” but offers much better results. Along with massage we also offer muscles rebalancing which is a series of stretches and exercised that pinpoints specific muscles that need to be strengthened and their antagonistic muscles that need to be stretched. We are the only company to my knowledge that performs these special techniques in Galveston County. When you come and visit our facility you too will be amazed with your results.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Mercedes-Absolutely. Massage, as well as other wellness focused facilities, is needed worldwide. Starting out anywhere can be rough, but with the desire to grow and prosper, pouring energy into the business will always come back to you.
Genesis-Massage therapy has a market anywhere you go. As long as there are people we got their backs. But more importantly you have to have the gift of touch and pride in your work. Each massage needs to be tailored to your client’s specific needs, not another cookie cutter massage. I would recommend starting out with a company with high standards and then branch off on your own after you have learned everything you could. At least that’s what I did.
