Today we’d like to introduce you to Geraldine Dyen.
Geraldine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Interior Design has always been my passion but it became my full-time job eight years ago when I founded Texture by G LLC. I started in Paris after many years spent overseas between the United States, Brazil and the United Kingdom. being exposed to different cultures, ways of life and environments triggered my creativity and dramatically enriched my sources of inspiration.
In Paris, I started to target international families settling in France. It was the perfect niche for me as I was able to understand their background while initiating them to the elegance and the refinement of the French Design. The bet was won and the business was flourishing.
However, in 2016, my dearest and loved husband was relocated to Houston. I then decided that my business partner, Dominique, will remain in charge of our French business while I will be launching Texture by G. in Houston.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is not a walk in the park. It takes time and requires resilience. When everything was well established and running at a great peace in Paris, it was time to start from scratch again in a new place, a new city, a new country. The challenge was tremendous. Thanks to my network and let’s say it that way: my ‘training’ to be thrown in full deep water without knowing how to swim, I started to weave my way to get there today, where I am.The business is still young and needs to be developed even more but I am managing a good number of projects and it makes my day. Sometimes it makes me laugh. Four years ago, I was dragging my feet when I had to board on the Air France flight bringing me to Houston. Today I thank whoever needs to be thanked for offering me this opportunity.
Texture by G LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At texture by G. we propose to our clients a meaningful design for timelessness and uniqueness. When I design, I’m writing a symphony. I select materials, finishes, fixtures and furniture in order to have them dialoguing together in a harmonious way. Shapes, colors and textures echo to each other creating a unique and genuine design. Nothing is superfluous. Each selection is meant. The fluidity between the different ambiances is created. Here in Houston, I enjoy being confronted with different situations, accompanying and guiding my clients to a lighter, timeless and elegant design. I’m always hunting exquisite gems, new designers working on a small scale, to propose to my clients unseen solutions.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was when I decorated a full apartment in the 16th arrondissement in Paris. This Brazilian family arriving from New York after a stay of 4 years was totally lost. They were almost signing their project with a showroom when someone gave them our contacts. Then an incredible adventure started. Those clients were art collectors. These unique pieces became our source of inspiration to create the setting they were deserving. Instead of bringing our clients in common showrooms, we had them meet with the young and still unknown designers we like to work with. Therefore, we were not just providing Interior Design services but a real cultural experience. They were not buying items. They were enjoying a real human story, they were discovering a new know-how, they were creating a deep relationship with the pieces that will be surrounding them for the coming years. In their interior, everything was making sense, everything had a unique story.
