Meet Gerri Curtis of Planet Curls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerri Curtis.

Gerri, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been envious of curly hair. I have beach waves! So I obsess with curls. In 2004 I went to New York for the IBS Show and met Lorraine Massey! When I stepped into the Devachan salon I couldn’t believe it. All the clients had curly hair. I called my husband and told him I wanted to open a salon just like this one. With 4 small children it took some time but in 2012 my passion became Planet Curls! We are in our 5th year our goal is to educate our guests as much as possible.

Naturally, Curly hair is beautiful. It should be worn, not blown out, pressed out, ironed out or chemically straightened. We now have a curl community! We hold events like our Tween camp, up-do party, and swap party. Staying current with education in the Hair industry is also a must for me. My first 10 years as a hairdresser were spent at Visible Changes a chain salon in Houston, I was 18.

They taught me that if you have a passion for something and drive you could achieve anything !! And that education was key! Our staff attends many classes in top cities to stay current with the trends.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been easy balancing family and a career. I started in a small 980 sq. Ft. Space with 2 other stylists who didn’t have a clientele. One was my oldest son who had been my apprentice whole in beauty school. The other didn’t know anything about curly hair. Training her while still working full time was a challenge. And getting both of them to realize if they stayed in the salon to build a clientele they would prosper. The former salon we were at was booth rental where you came and went whenever you wanted.

My salon is a commission based salon with a schedule. Trying to keep stylists happy is a big challenge.The biggest challenge is once they are educated and have a clientele. Keeping them from going to booth rental. I put all my energy in them. it has been painful, but I have learned a lot along the way. And has made me a stronger person, I now have another son following my footsteps, so I figure I’m doing something right.

Planet curls is a naturally curly hair salon, we specialize in all textures of hair from the slightest wave to the kinkiest coils. we cut hair dry, curl by curl or in curl groups. We try not to use harsh chemicals on the hair. We paint hair to create the perfect custom look for your curls.

As a company I am most proud knowing that many of our guests have never embraced there hair, now they do because Planet Curls has taught them what to do with what they have and they love it!! Going natural is the future!! What sets us apart is the fact they we understand clients with curly hair many of them don’t like it, don’t know what to do with it, and if they do like it, the hairdressers they have gone to in the past treat it like straight hair so the cut is odd and they try and convince them to straighten it. We are the complete opposite.

We are known plain and simple, Curly Hair!! Oddly enough, we are also known as a place guests with straight hair can come to get a perm!!!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Plans for the future too many to mention in my A.D.D. Brain Growth maybe another location. Or a product free of chemicals!
