Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanna Franceschi.
Giovanna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a kid I have always been amazed by anything related to baking. The mouthwatering smells, the impeccable details, and of course the wonderful flavors. It was an art that captivated all senses and it had me wrapped around its finger. Through my mother, who also loved baking, I learned the basics and one of the most important things, flavor was the key to success. You can make the prettiest dessert in the world, but if it doesn’t taste good, your work goes to waste. As I grew up, and the “grown up” responsibilities increased, I stopped baking. It wasn’t until years later that I would go back to admiring the work completed by bakers, and my search to find out “How do they do that?!” begun. I took evening classes to learn new techniques and started baking for family and friends. It wasn’t long before I started taking my “work” pretty much to any event where a dessert would be appreciated. Little by little more people started to request my deserts and business took off.
After some time, life brought us a new adventure and we moved to Houston. Once again family and friends that were here and knew my work asked to have their birthday cakes and other events done by me. My family again pushed me to start selling, and so the story repeated itself, and we became a home based bakery called Sugaricious.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There was only one thing smooth during the creation of Sugaricious, and that was making the decision to start. I knew I wanted to continue baking, but how? I was new to the area, worked during the day, sometimes extended hours, and got home exhausted. It was difficult to find the time to get things started. One night it all came together, a lot of ideas started pouring out of me, and suddenly I had a clear vision. I did my research and just started.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a home-based bakery under the Texas Cottage Food Law offering custom desserts for birthdays, weddings, holidays, graduations, baby showers, and any event you can think of. We are most known for our “Ponqué” cakes. These are the traditional celebratory cakes in Puerto Rico, often referred to as the wedding cake recipe, which are very moist and fluffy. In addition to cakes, we offer cookies, cupcakes, macarons, as well as dessert tables.
We put our love into baking each and every dessert. From the moment we receive a call or message, to the moment we deliver, we take the time to help each customer with their order. We understand that every event is important, and the customer is placing their trust on us to make their vision a reality.
What were you like growing up?
Being the third child in a family of four meant that you were always on the go. Whether it was going to dance classes with my oldest sister, or to baseball practice with my brother, we never stopped. Everyone in my house had at least one thing they focused their attention on. Me… There were just too many to name. But the thing was, we were always doing something. Most of my activities revolved around the arts, which led me into drawing. I remember once starting to draw on the walls of my room because it needed some personality!
I loved reading, but it had to be my books, if it was for school… nope. Most of all, I loved gatherings as there was always time for a party!! I still love these things, and if you go to my kitchen you will undoubtedly see me dancing and baking, while my daughters laugh in the corner.
