Today we’d like to introduce you to Girish Bharwani.
Hi Girish, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Belgium, and moved to the US when I was 2. I grew up in Ohio, and lived there till I was 22. I went to dental school at NYU and after I graduated spent about 6 months in Chicago, before moving to Houston in early 2011. I am married, with two kids, and enjoy my life in the Houston area.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life is never a smooth road. As a first generation immigrant, you really have to figure stuff out on your own. You don’t have guidance from someone who has lived a similar life. My parents, were from different countries, they were learning the cultural norms just as I was. A lot of immigrants have a survival mindset, which helps them work hard. Survival mindset is based from fear, and because of that a lot of decisions are made trying to mitigate as much risk as possible. This has been something that I have had to work hard at, to forget. Though, you never want to be risky to the point of wreck less, most of us understand that a certain amount of risk is necessary to reach your true potential.
The other thing I have struggled with throughout my career, is a bit imposter syndrome. I have done the work, truly tried to learn as much as I can above and beyond what is asked of me, and still sometimes, I feel there are others who can do what I can better. But than you speak to these people, and you realize, you are on the same level, and in certain aspects even more experienced, and you just need to trust yourself a little more.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a dentist in the memorial/west Houston area. I specialize in cosmetic dentistry, as well as TMJ disorders and sleep medicine.
The thing that I am most proud of is, that I have a staff and patients that have been with me for a very long time. Those times I have a bad day or question how good of a doc I am, I try to remember that these people who have been with me for over a decade wouldn’t if I was not good at what I do.
I don’t feel like anything sets me apart. I try to treat every person who comes into my office with respect and care. Every person has their own story and needs, and instead of trying to make them fit into my way of doing work, I instead try and understand what each individual needs and try to fulfill that.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’d say my mom and dad. My dad showed me how to work hard and showed courage under stress. My mom showed me what true potential looks like. My mom went back to school when I was in high school, became a nurse and than a physicians assistant. She got a 4.0 gpa throughout both programs. We graduated (me from high school, her from PA school) the same month. If she could do that with a family, I didn’t have any excuses to be successful myself.
My wife has always had faith in me, and supported me. We moved down here, for my career, and she has never regretted moving from a city she loved.
