Today we’d like to introduce you to Giselle Trevino.
Giselle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hey there! My name is Giselle. I’m a 21 year old professional makeup artist based in Houston, TX. Growing up I would always watch my mom get ready in the morning. She would open her box full of makeup and apply a perfect winged eyeliner everyday. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup as a teenager which made me want to wear makeup even more! I’d steal mascara and lip gloss from my mom’s makeup bag and wear it to school to take it off before I got back home. When I found makeup tutorials on YouTube my life had changed! I spent days and nights watching videos back to back learning so many different techniques. Once I started accumulating my own little collection of makeup, I would wake up extra early before school started to apply my little winged eyeliner. After doing a friend’s makeup for her prom night, I fell in love with the feeling of making others feel beautiful. The way my client’s faces light up when they see the finished result makes me so happy. In 2018 I started my makeup page on Instagram, The Almighty MUA. Not only do I love the classic glams, but the creative looks is what I live for! It wasn’t long until I started collaborating with amazing photographers and models! I did my first fashion show in May of 2019. The energy I felt backstage that night is what made me realize that this is something that I’m very passionate about. I can’t imagine myself doing anything or being anything else.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been the smoothest of roads so far. I’ve had to do a lot of free work to get the content that I needed to build up my portfolio. I was mobile for a while as well, so carrying my giant makeup kit and chair up three flights of stairs to get to a client wasn’t always the most fun. At least I got the workout in! But no matter what the “struggle” is, it got me to where I am today and there is going to be so many more bumps in the road because honey. We’re just getting started!
The Almighty MUA – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Apart from makeup, I do have a full time job as a customer service representative for a real estate company. If it were up to me, I would be doing makeup full time, but unfortunately, that’s not how reality works. You sometimes have to make sacrifices to achieve your goals. Being The Almighty MUA full time is my goal. I try to balance my day job with my dream job as best as I can. I’m currently building an in-home studio so that I can give my clients a great experience in an enjoyable environment! I am your professional makeup artist for all events. Weddings, Fashion shows, Video and Photoshoots, Birthdays, Halloween, Holiday parties, Baby showers, Date nights, Special occasions, or just because! I’m so proud of how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time and I can’t wait to see where this path takes me!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I had the opportunity to showcase my work at the RAW Artist Showcase at The House of Blues here in Houston! I took this opportunity to show the kind of creative makeup that I like to do. I had five models including myself. It took me about two weeks to come up with the looks and outfits for each model. But on that day, in just under 10 hours, I had myself and the models ready to go! Upon arrival, we passed out roses with my business cards attached. Seeing the crowds take an interest in my alien-looking models brought me so much joy! At the end of the show, we walked down the same stage where I’ve seen many of my favorite artists perform! It was such an exciting moment for me.
