Meet Glen and Honi Boudreaux of Jolie Vue Farms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glen and Honi Boudreaux.

Glen and Honi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Glen and I started our farm business to share our clean meats and eggs. We never used chemicals- we knew mankind had farmed for centuries by natural methods. We felt like we could raise healthier meats by being fertilizer and chemical free. We had cattle and chickens only at first. I went to the Houston Farmers Market weekly, at the Rice University, (we were founding members there) for almost 3 1/2 years. We decided we could reach more folks with a direct home delivery. We added our pork operation and found a chicken farmer and an egg farmer who use the same clean methods as we do.

We partnered up- direct sales is a much better vehicle for our products. Sure enough by rotating our animals- Moving them from pasture to pasture, the meat develops with stronger amounts of Omega 3’s and other nutrients and vitamins. Our grasses are not over grazed, the animal manure invigorates the grass and soil, the livestock is not crowded into tight pens. They enjoy the weather, the wildlife, and the freedom to roam and choose their dinner! No artificial enhancements needed. The medical and biological benefits of eating naturally come down to this: Eat this way now, or buy prescription drugs later! Plus our farm was a great place for our children and now grandchildren to learn about work and nature. They know how hard it is to grow food- our organic orchard and garden provides food for us and our animals. Do YOU know where your food comes from?

Has it been a smooth road?
Mother Nature is a tough taskmaster. Drought, floods, lightning, wild hogs, coyotes have been hard setbacks. But again, since our grasses have deep roots and are not stressed to their maximum use, (we move the cattle to the next pasture before they chew up all the grass in one spot), we can hang in there against all comers. We have added some irrigation from a deep well also, we fight hawks and skunks that want our chickens, too. But all God’s critters have to eat. Our farm has become a haven for wildlife since the deer, ducks, rabbits, turtles, fish, raccoons, snakes and many varieties of birds have figured out organic food is great at the Jolie Vue Farms. They don’t have to fight off chemicals, or drink dirty water. Up before dawn, sitting quietly on our porch, we see the animals slowly head back into the woods from nocturnal grazing. It’s beautiful.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jolie Vue Farms – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Jolie Vue Farms is a grass fed, all natural farm that brings beef, pork and chicken and eggs to your door once a month in an ice chest which we provide. Our meats are vacuum sealed and frozen, so they are fresh for 4-5 months at a time and fit in a refrigerator freezer, due to our unique packaging. Our grasses are herbicide, pesticide, hormone free- and our animals don’t do drugs. We use rotational grazing to strengthen our fields and not stress our proteins in the grasses. We offer lamb once a year, too. Therefore we are unique in our meats and eggs being so clean, high in CLA’s and Omega 3’s and iron, vitamins and minerals. We have the only grass fed hot dog in Texas.

We are unique also in that we deliver door to door, on a monthly subscription. (CSA) You can skip any month you want, or even sign up for every other month right from the start. We only charge when we deliver to you. You can have a combination of beef, pork and chicken or only beef, only pork , beef and pork, beef and chicken OR pork with chicken. We’ll deliver as many eggs as you’d like. Our taste and quality of our meats set us apart- we finish our animals on grass- we do not succumb to additives or corn to enhance or change their texture and flavor. Plus our customer service is second to none- we will bring meats to you and make it right. We give you a cookbook that we wrote and write a monthly newsletter to report to our members about events and problems at the farm, how the livestock is doing. We give out recipes that our customers share. Also, we share recipes and ideas that we have tried with our variety of cuts.

What’s your favorite memory from childhood?
Honi: Walking through my daddy’s garden eating tomatoes right off the vine! My father had a backyard garden that would feed 1,000! Oh, and making homemade ice cream. Nothing better.

Glen’s favorite memory would be fishing at his grandfather’s farm in Westlake, La. His grandpa was a retired dairy farmer by the time Glen knew him- but they still had the country place, where kids could run, bike, swim and play all day on the fields.
We both had natural, organic (not certified by that term) backgrounds from our families. If my daddy didn’t grow it, we didn’t eat it. So we both grew up knowing seasonal foods and eating with nature’s rhythms.
