Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Lamuye.
Grace, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Grace Lamuye, born to my parents, Prince Wale Lamuye and Princess Bisoye Aminu Lamuye. I am originally from Nigeria, West Africa, but I have been settled in the United States of America for about twenty-three years. My first hair salon was established about twenty-eight years ago in the city of Lagos in Nigeria – where I had spent the first twenty-four years of my life. For over seven years, I have had the opportunity to own and run a Protective Hairstyling Studio, which also features a Hair Loss Clinic and Natural Hair Products here in Southwest Houston.
As the first of six children, I have always found myself in a leadership role. I learned at a very young age that I had the knack for business and a gift of creativity with my hands, which has now formed the basis for my livelihood. I remember my first business transaction occurred when I was in elementary school. We were always let out of the private school I was attending about an hour earlier than most public schools. It was customary for me to wait at my maternal grandparents’ home till either one of my parents came for me.
While spending time at my grandparents’, I had observed that there was always a significant influx of elementary and high school students passing through her street to go back home from school every afternoon, so I implored my grandma to pick fresh almond fruits for me every morning because I saw a potential business opportunity. As a small business owner herself, she was very impressed with the idea and encouraged me to go for it. I sold out every day, and to me, that was the most fascinating experience that got the business mindedness ball rolling in my heart.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth ride. There was the start-up struggles – raising the right amount of capital for a startup business was challenging. Receiving financial support from the banking institutions was almost impossible. However, I am grateful for the support of family and friends.
Staffing struggles – this has been the second most challenging situation in my industry since startup. It requires specific skill sets along with a positive attitude, in order that utmost clients’ satisfaction may be attained. Unfortunately, we have had to maintain a revolving door of frequent staff replacements while aiming for the proper balance to be achieved.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the CREVNATURALS story. Tell us more about the business.
Our primary business – we offer a wide range of protective hairstyles to people from all walks of life. They include but are not limited to, hair braids, twists, cornrows, crochet, weaves, and numerous natural hairstyles, etc. We have a Hair Loss clinic onsite, where we focus on hair rejuvenation and hair regrowth therapy.
What really sets us apart is that our primary goal with every protective style executed has always been the health of our client’s hair, so we focus on using the safest naturally derived hair care products at all times, especially the CREVNATURALS’ brand. Also, we go to lengths to prevent some forms of alopecia and help clients maintain healthy hair and scalp conditions. Clients love it when we rise up to the challenge of learning any trending hairstyles just for them. One of the most important attributes we inculcate at CREVNATURALS’ is taking the time to educate our clients on best home maintenance practices. By empowering our clients with helpful DIY instructions, we ease up the stress of having to worry about not knowing what to do between appointments.
A lot of people appreciate the level of cleanliness that we maintain at Crevnaturals and go out of their way to mention it to us. ‘Safety first’ – this is our rule of thumb. Therefore, we never share tools among clients, as it is customary for us to wash and disinfect our combs with TDLR’s recommended EPA Barbicide after each use.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
As a woman of faith, I do not believe in the element of luck. Rather, I believe in a destined purpose, and I believe I am walking in my purpose as I perform every act of creativity on any of my clients – especially in an environment charged with worship. I believe it is my due diligence to offer the most serene atmosphere of relaxation to each client when they come in for service. Pretty much helping them put their worries at bay while their hair is being nurtured. This has ensured a host of repeat customers and helped form many healthy relationships with the most amazing people over the years.
