Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Stevens.
Greg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Prairie View A&M University. Upon graduation, I accepted a job doing custom design/integration for Boeing aircraft’s mod center. From there, I’d also work for Lithonia Lighting, Applied Materials & Cooper Cameron, which ultimately led me to Houston.
After a series of layoffs, I decided to start two businesses. The first and primary is Superior Audio Solutions, which specializes in the sales and installation of audio/video equipment for residential and commercial properties, and the second business is that of DJ NIMBUS.
I’ve been in music all of my life, and have always had an interest in hi-fidelity audio, so both were appropriate, additionally coupled with my custom design & integration background of Mechanical Engineering.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacles initially were getting my name out to the public on both fronts, and learning the ins and outs of business from a legal perspective. I also think convincing some people that small businesses can provide better service and overall quality than a big box retailer is a paramount challenge in terms of changing the perception of small businesses.
Please tell us about Superior Audio Solutions.
Superior Audio Solutions is most known for solving very unique and complex installs that most companies would avoid as well as creating some of the best sounding systems for most effective and economic options. One of my most proud accomplishments aside of approaching 16 years of being in business, is that I did a major project for the college I attended and graduated from. I’ve also managed to acquire a very high-end clientele who appreciates the quality of work only a technical enthusiast would love.
SAS (Superior Audio Solutions) sells most all things audio / video and offer a myriad of custom installation options that are custom tailored to each client and their respective property.
Regarding the other business, known as DJ NIMBUS, a few of my most proud moments are, djing for/meeting President Obama, as well as working with many of the artists I grew up listening to as a teen. This business shares the same start date as SAS. DJ NIMBUS specializes in non-mainstream music, and has been booked over the last 16 years for being a pioneer in several genres of music, not limited to, but including House Music, Neo Soul, Classic Hip Hop, Acid Jazz, Lounge and many more.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I would say I have too many to remember, but one that stands out, in particular, was my first band trip to Orlando Fl and watching the space shuttle take off. There were many life lessons taught on that trip, and it was the first out of state without my parents, so it was a pretty awesome adventure.
