Meet Gregory Jones of Soul Rolls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Jones.

Gregory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started cooking when I was 10 (due to being the second oldest of nine), ever since then I’ve loved it! Experimenting with different dishes and ingredients makes being in the kitchen an adventure. Once I graduated college, something clicked for me to want to cook for others. I always thought my food was good because I liked it. When I cooked for a friend’s birthday, everyone loved it and thought it was catered, even the people who didn’t know who made the food. That was the definitive moment I decided to share my food with the world!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road. One of many challenges includes working around my work schedule. Getting off, rolling, frying, and getting an order out 40 minutes away, all before 12 AM to ensure adequate sleep for work the next morning. Another one is balancing my time and sanity. I understand with the advancements in technology, we live in a “now” society. I get a bunch of “I’m hungry now” and “what you got on you right now”. My 24 hour processing policy definitely deters some people and it’s understandable. The business side is maybe the biggest obstacle and is also the most important. When it comes to bookkeeping, I know how much I spend and make, but decreasing my overhead to increase my profits is a struggle. These are just a few challenges I deal with but I grow and learn with every order.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Soul Rolls – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I make soul food egg rolls, Soul Rolls! I roll everything from smothered steak to veggies to fried chicken, mac and cheese and yams (my best seller!). My combination of foods, my flavors, and my names for my rolls make me unique! What also sets me apart is I make everything from scratch and made to order.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Future plans include a storefront and a food truck! I also plan on debuting more rolls!
