Meet Danielle Dubois of HangryHoustonian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Dubois.

Danielle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hangryhoustonian started from primarily a passion for photography and secondly a love of food. I moved to Houston almost four years ago after growing up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As the daughter of a restaurant attorney/owner, I have grown up surrounded by great food and culinary adventures. I was raised to have an advanced palette and I have developed an appreciation for great food at a young age. I have also always loved photography. I had such a passion for it that I studied techniques at the University Of New Orleans before transferring to LSU to finish out my degrees.

Growing up I was told I had “an eye” for photography, but to me, it was the ability to capture moments forever in time that intrigued me. Through HangryHoustonians, I have been able to combine my love for photography and food. It started out as a creative outlet. I was following other Houston influencers and thought I could do what they were doing and maybe meet some interesting people along the way. Almost a year later, I have been able to meet some incredible people and have some memorable culinary experiences.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There was definitely a learning curve when it came to the food Instagram world. I thought I knew how to take a decent picture, but I had to learn all that food photography entails. So much of what we do goes into editing and engaging. I look back to the first pictures I posted on Hangryhoustonian, to the content that is posted now and it is extremely different. I had to learn how to utilize light and how to take quality food photos as well as how to engage to grow my following.

Please tell us about HangryHoustonian.
I love supporting and doing marketing for restaurants. Having the social media influence to be able to pursuade people to try certain restaurants is so much fun! I want people to see photos I have taken and think to themselves, “That looks so good I want to bite my phone or I need to go there ASAP.”

I love sharing the great finds throughout the city. The purpose of my account is to bring exposure to restaurants and help boost our local economy. If I’m able to get a free meal while doing the marketing then it makes my job even better.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have lots of great memories working in my dad’s restaurants growing up. I would help the hostess seat people. It was always fun for me to greet people and walk them to their seat. You can say that was my first “taste” into the restaurant industry. I also always found my way to sneak back into the kitchen for snacks. Payment for my hard work.
