Meet Hank Schyma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hank Schyma.

Hank, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At a young age, I made a commitment to follow my ridiculous dreams for better or worse. Fast forward two or three decades later and I’m now traveling the world documenting thunderstorms, singing songs and snuggling with monster wild snakes for a living.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was a smooth and luxurious road. I woke up whenever, feasted on cold cereal, bananas, top ramen, and tuna fish and never once had to reel one in. I didn’t have to answer to a boss and never had to build a cabin. I slept on fluffy pillows and running water pumped the shit right out of whatever living quarters I was occupying.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a musician but I supposed I’m most well known right now for my documentation of tornadoes and lightning. My knack for finding pretty spots in the path of monster tornadoes sparked a YouTube channel and that led to some collaborating with atmospheric scientists among other things. My footage appears in movies, documentaries, TV shows, and what-not. It was the freedom of being a self-employed, working musician that enabled me to pursue all my other dreams including documenting wild animals around the world. What sets me apart from others? I like it when tarantulas crawl on my face.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The deck was stacked in my favor by being born into a wonderful, supportive family. I’m often asked what’s the secret to my success and I copy and paste this… work hard, work smart, make good life choices and stay the course.
