Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Rasowsky.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Heather. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Once upon a time, I had an idea. An idea that gorgeous flowers from weddings and other large events were going to waste after beautifying just one event. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Something Borrowed Floral Decor was born.
When the business started, I would reuse flowers from weddings and then repurpose the arrangements for baby showers, bridal showers, restaurants and more. I met people in the event industry, learned about arranging flowers and talked with people about their floral needs, but mostly listened; listened to what clients wanted.
Most people requested something simple and cost-effective, or “just” wanted the hydrangeas out of the beautiful, detailed arrangements that were being repurposed.
A new look started in the new year (2018) and I decided to run with a new concept called The Fluffy Flower.
It’s been exciting to continue creating flower arrangements for showers/parties and restaurants, but The Fluffy Flower has opened new doors to large corporate events, galas, and even events in other cities!
Occasionally we still get flowers from previous events like good ol’ times, but The Fluffy Flower uses fresh, new hydrangeas as the base of each arrangement. Additional flowers and greens can be added if desired.
We are based in Houston but have stylists in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Chicago and Denver. Let us know if you or someone you know is looking for flowers for your next event. And if you are crafty or have a knack for arranging flowers, contact us to be the next Fluffy Flower stylist in a new city.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The company has evolved tremendously over time and navigating the direction of the company has been a fun challenge to tackle. I really try to listen to what customers want and change, grow and evolve based on what customers request. Since the beginning, the concept of the company has changed. When I was repurposing flowers with Something Borrowed, people would think “discounted flowers” and want to pay next to nothing for some really extraordinary arrangements. It just wasn’t realistic.
But I realized that most people didn’t need or want anything fancy. They wanted something nice, fresh, full and most importantly, budget-friendly. With The Fluffy Flower, I have found a way to give people more bang for their buck when it comes to beautiful flower arrangements.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Fluffy Flower story. Tell us more about the business.
If you are looking for a simple, inexpensive floral centerpiece that adds beauty and freshness to your event, consider The Fluffy Flower! The hydrangea is a large flower that makes a statement on its own, giving you a good bang for your buck.
Hydrangeas are perfect for corporate events, fundraisers, galas, weddings, baby/bridal showers, dinner parties and more. I like to start with the client’s budget to determine what is realistic for the event space. Any type of flower or greenery can be added to the hydrangeas so there is a lot of flexibility to make the client’s vision come alive.
We also offer flower arranging classes. It’s a great ladies night out – learning tips and tricks about flowers, arranging them, drinking wine, hanging out with the girls. What could be better?!
I am proud of the twists and turns the company has taken to become what it is today. It’s very humbling when I meet someone new and they say that they have heard of the company. I get a lot of, “Oh! You’re the flower lady!”
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure that luck has played a huge role in life or the business. There aren’t really any parts of this process or business that have fallen in my lap. I had an idea and ran with it! I have taken the business down different paths.
Each path has led me to a path that works better than the last and opens the door to something new – a new friend in the event industry, a new type of event, a new client, a new theme/concept for an event, a new flower to work with. It keeps it fun and exciting! Word of mouth is key and social media has helped spread the word!
