Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Sholl.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Heather. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I played soccer throughout my childhood and in college, so when a job at the Texas A&M Rec Center was posted, I decided to study for a personal training certification and give my passion a chance. As a communications/PR major, I never imagined it would be the career that carried me through the next 20+ years! At 25, I had the opportunity to run my first gym in Hamilton, a small town west of Waco. The facility was the only one like it in the entire county, so I had the opportunity to have an impact on a tight-knit community, and I loved seeing the difference a gym made for the people. At the end of my time there, I worked with a local doctor and nurse to build in a cardiac rehab program so the hospital could absorb the business when I left. Fast forward 15 years, and I’m here in Houston, running a community centered training studio and working towards adding a cardiac rehab program! Since Houston is such a big place, I work hard to build a sense of community at our gym and with our women’s social group FBOMBS.
I love owning a business here and always appreciate the flexibility of being an entrepreneur. My husband and our twin boys make time to put in some work hours here too!
Has it been a smooth road?
Life is full of ups and downs, and life as an entrepreneur is no exception! I like to think that I’m more in control of the roller coaster by being the operator, but I’m still subject to plenty of unexpected challenges and rewards. One of the biggest challenges I faced as someone without a boss or a hierarchy in place is knowing when to pursue what priority. There are so many facets to starting and growing business that it’s not always clear which aspect I should be working on each day. I also think that it can be hard to recognize when you’re doing well because there isn’t anyone handing out promotions or raises!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Villages Gym – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Villages Gym is known for our exceptional service and professionalism. Our clients express their appreciation for the things we offer that support their healthy lifestyle and the option to have meal deliveries, onsite smoothies, MAT therapy, massage. Many of our members have memberships to country clubs that have large, impressive facilities, but they still come here for the trainers. We are also known for being accommodating for people with unique needs. Because all of our trainers have over 15 years of experience, they are well known among other local healthcare providers.
Personally, I specialize in coaching women through life changes. Self-care takes a backseat when life gets hectic. I help women prioritize their mental and physical health, so they enjoy it and find the time to reconnect to themselves and a healthy social circle.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the people of Houston! I was born in the Valley and raised in Austin, so when I moved to Houston, plenty of people questioned my decision. I assured them that although the heat, the traffic, and the strip centers are overwhelming at times, there is no better place to find amazing friends!
My least favorite thing is mosquitos, but let’s be honest, they’re everywhere!
