Meet Heather Walters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Walters.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve come to realize that my best decisions are the ones I don’t think about, but just do. Like the time my academic advisor said I should change my major from journalism to broadcast, which I did, without a thought. That change took me from college radio to Houston radio to NYC radio, which then opened all kinds of amazing doors into voice acting.

Radio Imaging was the first door that naturally opened, and it led to television promos then national commercials; and now TV affiliates.

Locally, I am the female imaging voice of Houston’s own country radio juggernaut, the new 93Q Country (KKBQ-FM). Recently, I’ve voiced promos for Comedy Central, and I was selected as the national commercial voice for Michelle Obama’s BECOMING tour and Ariana Grande’s SWEETENER tour.

Please tell us about your art.
It wasn’t until I jumped into voice-acting that I realized it takes WAY more than having a “nice voice” to make a career out of it. You must also know how to use your voice. For example, radio imaging requires a particular style of voice-acting, while commercials are more real, like storytelling. It’s the ability to breathe life into a company’s brand and message; to convey their message so that it resonates.

I am a voice-actor because I love the art of it; the creation. I also love that it allows me to work from my home studio in Cypress, making it easy to balance my work life with home life. That is so important to me, because even though I love being a voice actor, I love being a wife to my wonderful husband and mommy to my cherished 3.5-year-old son even more. Providing for that little boy by doing what I love is truly a blessing.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
If this is referencing politics, I haven’t personally experienced any big changes, so I can’t speak on that. The biggest changes I have seen is with ever-changing technology and its impact on broadening the voice-over industry. It’s not only commercials, promos, movie trailers, and radio imaging anymore. The video game industry has exploded, so the need for talented video game actors is huge. Audiobooks have taken on a whole new life, so has e-learning videos for the web, web commercials, corporate narrations, etc. On the flip-side, social media has made it possible for anyone clever enough, to launch themselves as working voice actors. It’s crazy cool. There was nothing like that when I jumped in, and it’s amazing.

The VO world is now a very, very big place.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Right now, you can see commercials for both Michelle Obama’s BECOMING Tour and Ariana Grande’s SWEETENER Tour airing on television. I saw the commercial for BECOMING during Good Morning America the other day, and the commercial for Ariana’s tour during SNL, so that was fun!

Oh, and the commercial for Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA is also now airing (and a fun side note – that show is currently playing in Houston!).

I recently recorded a promo for Comedy Central which should start airing soon.

And, I also voice commercials for local businesses!! Currently, I voice Houston’s Advantage BMW, Family of Faith, Marco’s Pizza, Los Cucos, and more!

You may also hear me locally as the imaging voice for Houston’s the new 93Q Country, and on many TV and radio stations across the US and Canada.

Visit me online to hear demos, and to contact me for rates. I look forward to knowing you!
