Today we’d like to introduce you to Heena Maknojia.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Heena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Makeup has always been an outlet of expression for me. I wear makeup like warpaint, and it will convey exactly how I’m feeling that day. Even though makeup has always been a part of my persona, it wasn’t until just two years ago when I decided to make it a professional endeavor. In the beginning, I was a little uncertain about the route I wanted to take in the makeup industry and what niche I would pursue; but luckily I was given the opportunity to work on a photo shoot with an amazing photographer. It was my first taste of editorial and fashion photography and I fell in love. The creative freedom and artistic collaboration that you experience on set was so inspiring! From then on, my perception of makeup changed. It was art! I strive to work on my craft and better my skills as an artist everyday.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a little bumpy but a rewarding journey thus far. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with some very talented and humble creatives. They’ve taught me many things and always inspire me with their work. But there have also been some letdowns along the road as far as reliability goes. There have been many cancellations, no-shows, and failure to just deliver on what was promised. Despite these ups and downs, I enjoy what I do so I learn from it and keep going!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Heena Mak – what should we know?
My brand is Heena Mak Artistry. I specialize in commercial, editorial and fashion makeup. I love to focus on the skin and to achieve a flawless complexion each time. I think my most proud moment yet has to be when I met one of my favorite makeup artists who also became my mentor. Not only did she like my previous work, she completely validated my brand. It was honestly one of the happiest days of my life!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have yet to achieve the level of success that I’ve envisioned for myself. But a characteristic that I would hope would contribute to my success would be integrity. I value my work and will continue to work wholeheartedly and with honesty.
