Meet Hemu Basu of The Sweet Sensation in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hemu Basu.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Love for Art, an accidental stumbling into an awesome cake recipe and a little bit of cajoling from my friends and family and The Sweet Sensation happened! I started my passion as a business four year back in Scotland, I moved to Texas with my family in August 2015. I bake since I remember, with my mother. but seriously started five years ago, at first it was just a hobby, but little by little it turned into a real passion, addiction, and finally an essential part of my life!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can say it was not a very smooth road, as I’m a self-taught so I struggled a lot to learn on my own through Cake Decorating books, google and YouTube videos. So, it’s hard if there’s no one to tell you if you’re doing it right or not!
But practice makes you perfect that’s what I’ve learned from my experiences.

The Sweet Sensation – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m an award-winning cake artist, I’m specialized in sculpted cakes and creating edible art. My work has been featured in several international cakes magazines such as Cake Masters Magazine, Cake Masters India, American Cake Decorating magazine, Sugar India. I have participated in several Cake competitions and collaborations-both national and international level. I think everyone has its own style of working, you can see my style of work in my cakes!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success usually implies a goal that took weeks, months, or even years to make happen
“Too many people measure how successful they are by how much money they make or the people that they associate with, “In my opinion, true success should be measured by how happy you are.” For me, it’s “Success is spending most of my time focused on work or tasks that are fulfilling and helping other people in a meaningful way!
