Meet Hugo Fuentes of Houston Plans & Permits in Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugo Fuentes.

As a native Houstonian, Hugo knows his way around the city and nearby areas. He’s lived in Navasota, Channelview, the East end, Aldine, Humble, Conroe, and the great city of Houston.

Hugo has enjoyed drawing since he was young. As a boy, he participated in school art contests and kept many sketch books filled with various artwork. While in high school, Hugo learned to draft, which lead to his interest in residential architecture and an associate’s degree at ITT Tech. He immediately began working with several local home designers learning the ins and outs of the trade and discovering how to navigate the building permit processes for different projects he worked on.

The next step in Hugo’s career came when he accepted an opportunity to work with a multi-million-dollar metal building company where he worked for almost seven years. He learned a lot during that time, but always wanted to come back to his passion — residential drafting. So, in 2007, he decided to take the leap and start his own small business.

From working out of a spare bedroom in his home to their current office on the 7th floor of an office building in the Heights, Hugo and his talented team members have worked hard to make Plans and Permits what it is today, and Hugo loves spending time with his team, whether working together to help a client, or out on the field with the Plans and Permits softball team. Hugo’s worked to cultivate a strong team environment to enable them to do their best while having fun at the same time.

In his spare time, Hugo works to stay up to date on business and industry trends to help grow his business. He also works closely with his wife, Thelma, investing in rental properties around the city. Previously, Thelma absolutely loved her work as a second-grade teacher, but has since become an integral part of the family business. Currently, Thelma manages their rental properties full time while also taking care of their four children.

Hugo has put together an amazing and talented team who strive to provide the best customer service to every Plans and Permits client. His team takes pride in ensuring that every project that crosses their desks stays below budget and on time.

Has it been a smooth road?
Business has not been smooth but overcoming the challenges has helped us get to where we are at today.

Learning the way the City of Houston works and learning how to deal with different types of clients has been the biggest struggles. We keep growing and with growth comes challenges.

Hiring staff and working with all types of personalities has also been challenging. Our new goals are for better team building and having a better culture for our young staff.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Houston Plans & Permits – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

I am most proud of our company’s growth and ability to honestly help our clients out with their complex issues.

What sets us apart is our ability to help our clients out and providing transparent services so we are all on the same page and to avoid future problems (even though they still arise lol).

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the diversification in cultures and the growth.

I dislike that there isn’t a lot to do with the family as other major cities.
