Meet Hyeri Park of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hyeri Park.

Hi Hyeri, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to the U.S. from Korea about 10 years ago to teach Taekwondo, starting my journey in North Carolina. During that time, I had the privilege of learning and working under Master Woosup Kim at Tiger Kim’s Taekwondo, where I grew not only as an instructor but also as a leader. After a decade of training and teaching, Master Kim and I partnered together to expand into the Houston area. In just two years, I’ve been leading three locations, and we’re now preparing to open our fourth Taekwondo school. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share the spirit and discipline of Taekwondo with so many families.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes, of course—it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Since English isn’t my first language, communicating has often been a challenge, but I’ve worked hard to improve, studying every night after work to get better. I also deeply miss my family in Korea, which has been another emotional struggle.

When I first opened the school in Katy, there were already so many Taekwondo schools in the area, so it was very difficult to build a good reputation and stand out. But we stayed committed, focusing on building real relationships and earning trust in the community. Little by little, with patience and effort, we’ve been able to grow and create something meaningful.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I teach Taekwondo—but for me, it’s much more than just a sport. Through Taekwondo, we focus on discipline, respect, character development, and helping students become the best version of themselves. Many people think martial arts is only about fighting or earning a black belt, but what we teach goes far beyond that. Our goal is to guide students to grow not only in their skills, but also in confidence, leadership, and integrity—qualities that impact their daily lives and strengthen our community. That’s what makes me most proud: seeing students transform into strong, respectful leaders who carry the spirit of Taekwondo everywhere they go.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Taekwondo is not just one of many activities you can choose from—it’s a lifelong practice that helps you grow as a whole person. Through training, you don’t just learn kicks and punches; you learn discipline, respect, perseverance, and how to face challenges with confidence. It’s about building both a strong body and a strong mind. I encourage everyone to give it a try—you may come in looking for exercise or self-defense, but you’ll discover so much more about yourself along the way.
