Meet Ike Ekwueme of Inturnet Avatar in Missouri City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ike Ekwueme.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ike. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been making music since 2013. I had always wanted to make music or be creative in general from a very early age but I was never put into one of those early age musical classes that parents put their kids in when they notice their potential. I was always an observer wanting to participate but never getting the chance to.

What really inspired me to get involved rather waiting for the magical moment was because the Internet, by Childish Gambino. I had become a fan of his music early on, way before I knew about his acting or comedy. But seeing his execution in every art form he participated in made me think to myself that if he can enter these new space because he wanted to I could as well too.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have come to realize there is never a smooth road when comes to chasing what you want. In my early stages, I struggled with seeing my peers doing things in music that I myself thought I couldn’t accomplish and that just lead me into a limbo state of dealing with my confidence when it came to creating my art and finding my true sound within myself.

A lot of the learning process and creating process with most artist I feel is finding the confidence to fail as you are trying to become better at what you do, and I definitely feel that this a road you’ll always be dealing with but becomes less of a burden as you progress.

Please tell us about Inturnet Avatar.
I like creating music that gives a feeling. More so focused on creating a soundscape that takes people back to certain memories and times in their lives. What I put into the art is my feeling and emotion and I just hope to communicate it in the best way I know how. Whether it is flipping a sample or laying down some keys, I just want people to feel what I am feeling or share and understand in my pain or pleasure that this life has provided me with.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Can’t say I can single one out, but one that sticks out to me is my first memory of liking music. It was me watching the music video for “Who Let the Dogs Out” by the Baha Men. I don’t know why that memory stands out the most, but that is one moment I always revisit in my mind.
