Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Garcia.
Isabel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Isabel Garcia. I was born in Queretaro Mexico, and I moved to Houston when I was six. I am the oldest grandchild on both sides of my family. I am a Senior Communications major with a marketing minor, I am graduating in December 2023. I am the Host of BOLD a MaxStudios podcast. In this role, I interview bold students and alumni at the University of St. Thomas. I have been doing this for over two years, and it is my passion. I found out about it through the St. Thomas app, MaxStudios posted that they were looking for a new host. I sent in a video and got the job! I also work at Pengu Swim School, where I teach kids how to swim.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In my life, it has been a smooth road thanks to my amazing family.
Overall being the host of BOLD has been the biggest learning challenge but in a good way. When I first started, I was a freshman education major and a fan of podcasts. I started all through Zoom, which was a challenge since it was my first-time hosting, and it was all online. Over time I started picking up different things not just about hosting but also camera setup, editing, and social media. I changed my major because of how much I love this job and how much I have learned.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the Host of BOLD. I interview students, alumni, and professors who are doing interesting things on campus. I am known for being the unofficial face of UST. Since last year I had a banner on campus and on the TVs on campus show BOLD. I am most proud of how much I have grown as a person. Every person I interview I learn from and apply to my own life. I think what sets me apart from others is that there is no one else doing what I am doing on campus. Also with this role, I get to meet so many cool people and go to fun events. Some of the events that I have been able to go to are World Youth Day in Lisbon and host the University of St. Thomas Gala.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I feel like I am still a beginner in this but if I had to give any advice, it would be that people are not going to tell the story that you want them to, they are going to tell their story. I feel like a lot of times I go into an interview thinking I know what the other person is going to say but during it, they surprise you. Also, people want to share their stories you just have to ask the right questions.
