Today we’d like to introduce you to Israel Rodriguez.
Israel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been painting for about four years now. Self-taught. I have always been artistic since I can remember. Back in elementary, I would love to draw comics. Marvel characters mainly. About five years ago I decided to follow my creative side and go to school to become a graphic designer.
One of the classes I had while attending The Art Institute had us create a stop-motion video. I had a canvas that a friend had given me but I had never painted before. Decided to give it a shot and create a painting as my project.
Ended up finishing the piece over the weekend and ever since then, I haven’t stopped. I’ve learned so much through trial and error. I feel as if I’m finally starting to find my style and I absolutely love it.
More and more I feel like people are starting to recognize and appreciate my artwork. Its extremely motivational and I’m just really excited because I’m just getting started!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am nowhere near where I want to be with my artwork. As far as being noticed and at the skill level id like to be at so I can’t really say. I’m constantly trying to improve and experiment and to challenge myself.
I’m pretty sure every artist struggles at some point. Social media has helped a lot and the fact that I throw my own art shows at the end of the year as well has gotten me a lot of exposure.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a self-taught Houston artist whose work has different styles such as abstract/pop art/contemporary & modern. I have always remained neutral in my vision. I see beauty in others interpretation on my expressions. I have never felt the desire to explain my creations because the actual revelation is up to everyone’s perception.
I love to create pieces that will make the audience think. I have a thing for incorporating anatomical hearts to my pieces. People are really starting to notice, and I love it.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance and persistence. Daily dedication to your passion. It’s important to take breaks if necessary. It’s extremely easy to get frustrated when it comes to creating art.
One thing that’s helped me a lot is to realize when to accept that I need a break. Before I would beat myself up and consider myself a quitter, but sometimes we just need to recharge our batteries so that when I get back to it, I’m open-minded and calm.
Sounds cliche but you really do have to work at it as much as you possibly can. It takes a lot of self-dedication and motivation to do something with your passion and actually make something real out of it.
