Meet J.D. Pedigo of Velocity Business Products

Today we’d like to introduce you to J.D. Pedigo.

Velocity Business Products got its start from 2 people needing each other’s help. Wayne Harley owned a little office supply company called Metro Office. He and his wife were looking to retire and did not have a succession plan. J.D. Pedigo worked for many years for a large, independent dealer and had opened up the Houston market in 2000 with great success. In 2009, J.D. and his former employer parted ways. J.D. always had an entrepreneurial spirit and needed an existing structure, as well Wayne needed some new energy and vigor.

We’d love to hear more of your story.
We both ran across each other that exact day and both explained our situation to each other. After a few meetings, we decided to become business partners and form Velocity Business Products. Since that time over 8 years ago, Velocity still does office supplies but has really grown its furniture side of the business. We have a brand new showroom on the North side of Houston at Richey and 45. As well as employ a professional Interior Designer. We have a passion for our customers seeing an amazing end product that they helped pick out and design. Velocity is changing the way Office Furniture Space Planning is being designed. We have our customers come into our showroom, sit down with our designer, and go over the whole floor plan in 2D. Once this is perfect, we switch to 3D and apply all of the finishes selected. At this point the customer see exactly what their space will look like. This drastically reduces the time it takes to complete the project.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I do not believe there is ever an absolute smooth road. We have definitely had our trials. We started during the recession, as well as having to get a non-compete waived from J.D.’s former employer. However, in many ways it has been smooth in terms of partnerships as we have never once had a fight. However, cash flow like any other company has been an issue throughout the years. The good Lord always provides! 🙂

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Velocity Business Products – what should we know?
Velocity Business Products used to be primarily an office supply company when we started. However, in the last 4 years, we have really taken off as a contract furniture company. We have the added benefit of being on both sides. This allows for us to do large jobs because of our design capability and manufacturers that we are direct with, however we also have access to stocked product for next day delivery. We are proud of our relationships that we have built with our customers, as well as our new showroom on the North side. We feel like we have grown up. What sets us apart most is how we go about design with the end user. Nowhere else that we know of will actually invite the customer to come in and help with the design as we run the controls on the software. This REALLY saves the customer time. Velocity is a Service Disabled Veteran Owned HUB.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We have many people to thank. Most importantly God, and our families for getting us through the tough times and allowing us to take a chance. We definitely need to thank all of our customers, employees, and vendors. All who are great. Our Vistage peer group has helped the last few years.
