Meet Jackie Butler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Butler.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My Mother Carmela Cantu opened our Salon in 1978. I have been so blessed to be a part of such an amazing industry and to have had my mother as my biggest mentor. Our biggest goal is to ALWAYS serve our guests and make them feel special and beautiful. Being in the service industry is SUCH AND HONOR! Mom and I decided about 30 years ago to become an exclusive Paul Mitchell salon. Their morals and ethics were in alignment with how we ran our Salon. They have been supportive in so many ways. Providing in salon technical and business education.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My Mom and biggest cheerleader was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about 7 years ago. When Houston had the Memorial Day floods our salon flooded. We lost almost everything. I was so grateful my teammates were all safe and so were their homes. Fortunately, we were able to work and replace our equipment. A little over a year later our city had hurricane Harvey. Our salon was five feet underwater. It was absolutely devastating! We were able to relocate while the rebuilding began. The golden shears team are some of the most special people!! We worked side by side …. Our clients were so amazing!!!

As we were able to work 6 weeks displaced we saw so many losing everything. We had word of a special young couple who had to evacuate their home while the sweet lady went into premature labor while her home was flooding!! They had just had their baby shower and lost everything!! We collected clothes, diapers, money for this beautiful couple. At that point, we knew God wanted us to help others!! We collected school supplies and backpacks and clothes and loaded them on a trailer and took them to Aransas pass. We did haircuts for the first responders, police officers, and team rubicon. We were so grateful for being able to help our beautiful city. The hardest thing we have overcome is the loss of my beautiful mom on December 1, 2019. After that I almost walked away from the business. I walked in the salon on a day we were closed and cried. I couldn’t continue this journey without her….. My husband told me she would want me to continue the legacy she built almost 40 years ago. Once again I’m so grateful for my teammates, they carried me. I truly believe if God wasn’t apart of our business we would have not been able to survive. We are living our purpose. Love others and share the gifts we were given.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am so lucky to have the ability to serve! Every person that walks into the salon had a choice on where they went to get their hair done.

I absolutely love love love razor cuts! You are literally sculpting a shape! It’s truly an art.

As I get older, I’ve been behind the chair for 36 years I realize the importance of mentoring the next generation. I love sharing with them about the wonderful career they have chosen.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Absolutely! Sanitation has always been a priority in the salon industry. I’m very proud that it hasn’t spread in salons or barber shops. We take sanitation seriously!

We are able to make people feel comfortable and safe. It was a gift to be able to help people who were suffering with loneliness and depression. People need people! We are social creatures. It was a great feeling to laugh and see our guests “smiling eyes”
