Meet Jamal Carr of North Houston Tx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal Carr.

Hi Jamal, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I became interested in hair care during college. I met a barber who started teaching me the tricks and trades of the industry. I was 19 years old when I experienced the joy of making others think more highly of themselves. Now at age 37, I can honestly say I’ve put the work in and mastered my craft to be able to create a demand for my art. I went though very humble beginnings for sure. I slept on the floor of a vacant apartment for over a year to be able to be in business for 7 years now. I trained myself to give an experience that I feel is superior. I haven’t worked for anyone other than myself since 2018. I found my niche and clientele who absolutely appreciates what I bring to the table. My story is really a story of consistency, diligence, and creativity. The best thing about my business is, I have yet to even reach my full potential. The first year in business I remember making $2300 that year. Now in year seven I’m making over $70,000. It’s safe to say growth is inevitable when consistency is guaranteed.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had many struggles during my business tenure. The first year I didn’t even make enough to feed myself independently on a daily basis. I didn’t have a bed or furniture. I ate McDonald’s 6x a week to survive. When that wasn’t enough, I had to sell my car to have money to keep me in business for a few months. I ended up losing the job I had after 6 months from the company going under. Fortunately by the time the company folded I was making half of the paycheck I was receiving from them. When that happened it created a fire in me that is still burning till this day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The clientele that considers me a jewel are the older men who suffer from hair loss, skin conditions. Most barbers don’t possess the patience to overcome their challenges. I mastered the art of hair and skin solutions that most barbers consider a waste of time. Also, the best quality I possess outside of quality haircuts is the grace I have for men who don’t have anyone to vent to. I listen well but more than that I open up more than any man they have ever talked too. My greatest tool is the honesty I have with my clients about life and overcoming its challenges.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is waking up everyday and doing what you absolutely love despite the financial gains.
