Meet James Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Brown.

Thanks for sharing your story with us James. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I finished from Southern University, I went to work at the Greater Houston Convention Bureau in Accounting. Being the “young, social butterfly” as my Controller at the time called me, I started to learn about the Sales Department. I spent two years in Accounting before moving to Sales. Once in Sales, I was able to cover several market segments, including sports and national corporations. One day a client called and asked me if I did Voice Overs. Because of my lack of knowledge in that area and based on my response, the client politely told me to go and research the production technique and consider it – as there are many people with great voices who get paid to use them. I mentioned this encounter to a fellow co-worker in passing, and not long afterwards, we were at an event where a talent agent just happened to be. The co-worker forced me to speak with the agent, who then asked me if I had a demo. Of course, I had no idea what a “demo” was, so she gave me the number of a Voice Over Coach to call. The Voice Over Coach and I spent several sessions together, and ultimately my first Voice Over demo was produced. Several months later, another co-worker became President of a local organization and part of her responsibility was to oversee the monthly luncheons, except she hated being on stage! She asked me if I would emcee the luncheons for her, and she would make presidential remarks when needed. During the luncheons, one of my roles was to introduce the guest speakers. One particular speaker called me over after the luncheon and asked me who I was and what I did for a living. He explained that with my style, voice, audience engagement, and personality, I needed to be on stage speaking, and that we needed to have lunch. That same day, a client/friend sent me a text that said, remind me to talk to you about speaking. After a conversation with the speaker and prodding from my client/friend, I started looking into the speaker’s world. I had interviews with speakers I met over the years, took workshops, classes, and two years after that luncheon, I launched into the Professional Speaking arena in addition to becoming a Voice Talent and Emcee.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth? Is anything in life smooth? The road has been what all roads are…some good, some bumpy, some under repair, some ups and downs, but they all lead to the destination. Building any business from the ground up requires time, patience, resources, energy, and people. The biggest ‘struggle’, if I may call it that, is realizing that there are 1000 ways to do it. My journey is for ME, and what works for somebody else may not necessarily work for me. There is no instruction manual for this industry, but the majority of the people I have met along that way have been phenomenal.

We’d love to hear more about the company.
JamesBrownJr360 is a company that specializes in vocal or verbal communication. We do everything but sing. What does that mean? We use our voice as a Professional Speaker, Emcee, and/or Voice of god (VOG); live on/off stage or pre-recorded. As a professional keynote or breakout speaker, the topics we focus on are customer service oriented and rewarding/revenue business relationships. Each speech is customized for the client and delivered dynamically and engagingly. As an Emcee, we meet with the client to discuss needs, expectations, understand the audience, and discuss tone, tempo, and what the overall objective is. We can also pre-record some of the standard things but are always ready to make adjustments on the fly. As a voice talent, we do commercials, e-learning, phone greetings, VOG either in our studio or we use yours.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is a dynamic city for my type of business and for just about any kind of business. As the 4th largest city in the country and one of the nation’s most diverse cities, Houston offers entrepreneurs and soon to be entrepreneurs access to all sorts of resources. From legal to financial, to creativity, to music, to food & entertainment, not to mention being affordable and incredibly diverse, Houston is the ideal location for businesses that are just beginning or are already established. I have many mentors and industry friends that are local, giving us the fortunate opportunity to meet face to face.
