Today we’d like to introduce you to James Schwab II, Rigoberto Rosales, and Connor Thompson.
James, Rigoberto, and Connor, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The three of us bought Rockin R Ranch from its previous owner in 2015. We renamed it, Grizzly Pines. We decided we wanted to reopen this campground as an all-male gay campground with an idea of providing a safe place in the woods where men who identify as gay or gay-friendly can come and have a safe place to meet and be themselves. We have been adding new sites, more RV’s, primitive tent sites, tent sites with electrical and water. We added a hot tub and we have regular events.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Reopening Grizzly Pines was in itself easy at first. We soon began to understand the need to sacrifice a large amount of time and that is driven by an ever-increasing demand for such a place. Redesigning, planning and growth are all extremely expensive.
Please tell us about Grizzly Pines LLC.
We as the owners of Grizzly Pines are extremely happy with the response from not only our previous clients but also all of the new clients and members of our community. Our growth is attributed to our popularity and we think to a large extent our area of woods and nature. We focus on providing a safe haven in what is essentially an almost central location between Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas. We are known for our hospitality and our friendliness.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think if we had done anything differently, we would have tried to slow and guide our growth a bit better. We feel we keep up but expansion can be a rough teacher. We feel the need to constantly change and move to accommodate others. We have learned that you cannot be inflexible and that you must be ready for changes as they happen. We have learned to listen to our clients and to others who visit us, with an ear toward learning what changes and improvements we can make to better serve our clientele.

What an awesome voyage you guys have done in growth, accommodations and fun for all. Great and very well orchestrated in accomplishments along with the talents and strengths of its members along with awesome photography and memories of such a short time ownership. What has made this campground what it is today and growth in its future is allowing the members creativity and hard work to open and freely do what they’re best at, an attribute to a successfully run camp for ALL
