Meet Jan Lim of JJV Event Decor in West

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Lim.

Jan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
JJV Event Decor was inspired by my grandmother Juanita J. Villamor, who used JJV as her initials. She always encouraged me to show my talent, especially with flower arrangements. She always bragged to everyone, who was amazed by the beautiful floral arrangements I did. The artist side of me always comes out especially when I am thinking and being inspired by her. My arrangements started with floral designs offered to my late grandfather’s grave, then to table centerpieces and dessert table arrangements.

When I came to the US, I started doing floral arrangements, handcrafted decorations for weddings, birthdays, baptism, bridal and baby showers of my friends and coworkers. I make unique birthday boards and projects in the hospital I am working, where my projects were published in our newsletter. Upon seeing all my decorations and set up, my friends and coworkers encouraged me to start a business out of my passion, where I can share my talents to everyone and make their events more memorable thru my designs. After I finished my short course in Floral Designs and Wedding Consultant/ Event Planner just recently, I decided to push thru this business so I can make everyone’s event stylish, personalized and memorable.

I started by making a Facebook Page under JJV Event Décor, where I posted all my projects and events. Then people saw my posts and they started inquiring and asked me to decorate their parties too.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business is hard but I did not feel the pressure at all because I am enjoying what I do. I have a full-time job as a nurse and this business is my way of diversion from the stress from working in the hospital. One of the challenges I have with this business is that I work alone. Since I am just starting and I usually do small parties, I have to do it all by myself, from designing, buying the materials, loading the decorations to my car, setting it up and removing the decorations after the party. Sometimes, the events I do falls on my working days, so I usually get up early, set up the decoration and come back to remove the decorations after my shift.
