Today we’d like to introduce you to Janay Lewis.
Janay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I discovered my passion for styling hair at the age of eight. I began to practice various hairstyles on myself including the use of hot tools, hair extensions, and styling products. My journey started at the age of 12 when I landed my first client. From that moment on, I knew this would be something I would enjoy doing for a very long time.
After I graduated from Cosmetology School, I decided to take a leap of faith and move to Houston, Texas with $600 and my childhood dream. I had no idea where I was going to start or even if I was strong enough to provide a better life for me and my son.
Fast forward two years later, I am still continuously reaching new heights! The first year I worked at a hair salon to not only work as a Hairstylist but observe and understand the overall concept of how to run a salon. The following year, I decided to quit my job to start my own business. Once again, I took a leap of faith, and I have been working independently ever since. My skills have landed me the opportunity to work with Olympic Gymnast Simone Biles, ESPN Magazine, E! News & many other major brands!
I continue to share my testimony with my clients & other hairstylists’ to give them hope and inspire them to chase their dreams no matter how many obstacles may arise. Hard work, as well as my God-given talents combined with faith & consistency, is what I believe in.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I had to face a lot of financial battles, stress as well as teaching myself how to start and run a small business on my own. there were times wanted to give up, but I didn’t. through these tough times, I didn’t realize it was to help bring out the best in me as well as become mentally stronger than ever before!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work as a hairstylist to my business Gemini Tresses. I specialize in healthy hair care and extensions. I am mostly known for my Brazilian Knot technique which is a method in which I use elastic thread and hair extensions to create a natural realistic looking hairstyle. I am proud of myself for building my brand from scratch without any help and continuing to grow my business as an independent entrepreneur. I set myself apart by not only making my clients look beautiful, but I provide a lot of positive information via my youtube channel and Instagram to help them believe in themselves to go after their goals as well. I would call myself a motivational hairstylist… I have never met one of those before.

I don’t believe in luck. I just believe in hard work & consistency.
