Meet Jaquia Abreu of GullyThoughts in Pearland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaquia Abreu.

Jaquia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started GullyThoughts blog in March of 2018 as a creative outlet. I had a suicide attempt five months prior to that. I ended up in an outpatient program for three weeks in a mental hospital. I also just left my Corporate America job and was going through a divorce and I needed something to keep me afloat spiritually, mentally, emotionally and creatively. And my blog was just that. What started as a creative outlet became a tool for me to inspire and encourage anyone that was going through depression or that experienced suicidal thoughts. I eventually published my poetry book Unorthodox Words in March of 2019. This book contains a collection of poems that helped me through the difficult phases in my life. I wanted to write this for anyone that felt alone and felt like no one understands what they are going through. My writing and my poetry has saved my life and has been a constant way to express myself, reflect, and release emotions that I never allowed to escape. I just always hope my writing does the same for others as it does for me. Whether that is through my blog, my book, my podcast or just the way I live my life. I just want to inspire and send love to the people that need it the most through my words.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been extremely blessed and I am so grateful for all the open doors and opportunities that have come my way. As rewarding as this journey has been, there definitely has been some struggles. I have been trying to keep my mental health in balance and some days I do not do such a good job of that. Being a self-published author, blogger and podcaster, I am my own team. And some days it is rocky when I push myself too hard and overwhelm myself with maintaining my business and brand. Let’s just say I can do a better job of stepping back, saying no and taking breaks.

GullyThoughts – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
GullyThoughts LLC is a company that brings awareness to how important mental health is and how important it is to talk about serious issues like depression, suicide and emotions in general. GullyThoughts blog, Gully Talks podcast and my poetry book Unorthodox Words all have one thing in common; which is to spread love, to inspire and to help people feel free. My mission for this company is to influence people to remember their own power and greatness. So I can truly say I am proud that GullyThoughts is staying true to that. I haven’t always been so bold and outspoken and I am also proud that I can finally speak my truth and give a voice to the voiceless through my platforms and content. We are all unique and we all have that spark in us that nobody else has. I think what sets me apart is that I want to see everyone win and don’t see any other company, business, author, podcaster or blogger as competition. I genuinely want to inspire any and everyone that needs just a little hope. I encompass an authentic energy and plan to do so for the rest of my time on this Earth whether that is through my business, my art, my writing or just the way I live my daily life.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Consistent peace through the chaos is my definition of success. As an entrepreneur and creative, there is constant change and obstacles left and right. I am still navigating how to stay grounded and be at peace with whatever circumstance that comes my way. When I reach that level, I know I can accomplish absolutely anything, which to me is the ultimate success.
