Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Sorensen.
PTSD Awareness Foundation is a non-profit organization created by Jared Sorensen in 2015. Jared is a U.S. Navy veteran who served in Afghanistan in 2008-2009 as well as a 20 year veteran of the Houston Police Department. Jared now deals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on a daily basis.
The foundation was created to help those veterans, first responders and victims of crime deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in any way possible whether that is through providing new forms of technology to help deal with PTSD at no cost to the person suffering from PTSD, providing education, or through scholarships for education. Jared formed the foundation after seeing the lack of assistance that was being provided to fellow officers and service members.
In 2018, the foundation hopes to grow even more through donations from private companies as well as individual donations. After recent events in the Houston area (Harvey hurricane), the foundation is partnering with other local charities to provide assistance to even more people who suffer from PTSD.
Has it been a smooth road?
It is never a smooth road. When I first started the foundation, I had several ideas as far as fundraisers and ways I wanted to help others. The problem, of course, was finding funding sources. I started using the GoFundme site but had little to no interest. I then went towards corporate grants and donations but found that to be lackluster as well.
As of today, we have some income from Amazon Smile and other employee contributions but are still looking for larger sources of income. For 2018, we are looking at providing a college scholarship to the child of someone who suffers from PTSD.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with PTSD Awareness Foundation – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As previously stated, we are a non-profit that specializes in providing assistance to veterans, first responders, and victims of crime who suffer from PTSD. We have provided sleep trackers to individuals in order to help them and their doctors track sleep patterns of PTSD sufferers.
I am most proud of being able to provide services to those who suffer from PTSD and feel that sets me apart from other organizations that attempt to only raise funds in order to hire employees and sell t-shirts or other “swag.”
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity in our city. We have all races and backgrounds which make this city great along with some of the best food in the world. The one thing I hate about the city is the traffic and the way people drive. If we could fix that, this city would be amazing.
