Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Watson.
Hi Jasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got started with taxes my junior year in high school. My uncle would have me prepare his taxes every year after he retired. I remember him handing me boxes of receipts for medical bills, prescriptions, co-pays, mortgage interest, etc. And having to add everything up to itemize his return. One day my best friend, Quentierra, asked if I wanted to prepare taxes professionally and start a business. Without hesitation, I agreed and started learning everything I needed to become a tax professional and operate a tax office. Together we founded The Taxx Surgeons also known as Taxx Surgeons & Co in October of 2019. Due to us both having other businesses outside of taxes I took on the task to operate the business while she prepares returns and manages other preparers. I learned a lot the hard way being a business owner which fueled my passion to help other black-owned business owners learn the requirements of owning a business, required tax filings, how to save money on taxes, and the importance of accurate record retention to report income and expenses. Since opening in 2019 we have grown tremendously. In 2022 we managed to grow to a team of 6, helped over 260 taxpayers, registered 10 LLCs and Non-profit organizations, and helped several black-owned businesses obtain grants and business credit.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Yes, although in the beginning, I struggled with finding affordable software, building clientele, advertising, and building a team. As I gained more experience and learning through trial and error it has been easier.
We’ve been impressed with Taxx Surgeons & Co, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Taxx Surgeons & Co is dedicated to helping individuals and business owners learn about tax laws, credits, and deductions and save them thousands in taxes legally. We offer Tax Preparation, Tax Planning, Tax Software, Bookkeeping, Business Registration and Consulting, Credit Building and Restoration, and Notary. Not being educated is one of the reasons many overpay taxes or start a business and have no clue what to do or who to turn to. We’ve found many tax companies focus on preparing taxes and offering the biggest refund but not educating taxpayers and business owners on the things they should do throughout the year to save money and avoid taxes legally. We’re here to solve that problem by not only preparing taxes or registering businesses for our clients but also educating taxpayers and business owners.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’ve found when networking, it’s best to shoot your shot. If there’s someone you’re interested in working with or learning from shoot your shot. If you don’t try, you’ve lost an opportunity. All it takes is one YES!
