Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Hane.
Jason, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been a fan of electronics. When I turned 18, I became a mobile disc jockey. This furthered my passion for electronics and music. I also, started installing commercial systems during the week for bars, restaurants, church’s, etc. When I moved to the Houston area, I started working for Tweeter/Home Entertainment. They were a high end audio video company that installed consumer electronics. I worked for them for over 3 years and then they went bankrupt and I lost my job. When they went bankrupt, I knew they were not passing the clients names over to anyone, so I mailed about 400 letters out to the clients I serviced letting them know that I could help them with their systems if needed. I went to work for another company after Tweeters bankruptcy and asked my boss if he was interested in me bringing the clients I mailed letters to on board, but since he only did really large jobs, he turned my offer down because the jobs were too petty for him. I worked for him for about a year and farmed all of the work I was getting from the Tweeter clients to my friend Rafael. Rafael did the work, he got the money, but I invoiced and kept the client. We did this for a year and then I wanted to take a leap of faith to see if I could do it on my own. I was only giving Rafael about a day or 2 worth of work each week. I told my boss that I wanted to try it on my own with my Tweeter clients and put in a 4 week notice out of respect and asked if I could come back if I fail. He said he understands and yes. Before I could finish out my 4 week notice, I was personally booked out 2 weeks. I was so busy, that I had to hire 2 people in the first month. Then I hired another person on average of every six months. Here we are 8 years later, with an office, 14 employees and a staff that does not need me there. The team and the business runs itself and I am not needed.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first 5 years were great, but I was working a lot and very hard. Then my life took a terrible turn and several tragic events transpired in my life. All in the span of a couple months from Nov to Dec of 2014, I lost my grandmother who was dear to me, my dog almost died from an illness and is now on permanent medication, we went through a sales tax audit where we had made a mistake that cost me 10’s of thousands of dollars to pay back, I lost 2 key people that told me they never wanted to leave working for me and my 5 year old daughter came down with a rare disease that incapacitated her physically. She was diagnosed with JDM. JDM is where your immune system starts attacking your own body and starts destroying the muscles and skin. It starts in the extremities and then moves to the organs where it is fatal. We caught it right before it reached her organs. I found myself working even more and harder with losing 2 key people over the next year while at the same time trying to take care of my family. My daughter’s recovery process is on-going and the doctors are not optimistic of a full recovery. There is no cure for this disease, only treatment. This cause me to want to spend more time with my family (which is why I opened the business). I hired a business coach and they helped me identify what needed to change, people I needed to hire, and systems I needed to implement. It took me another 2 and half years to do this, but here we are with a company that does not need me anymore and I am free to spend more time with and care for my family.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was when I went and stayed with my grandfather in Lake Tahoe. He is a stunt pilot and has several different airplanes including a WW2 p-51 Mustang. This was only my second time to meet him. I visited his house in Arizona first, then we flew one of his planes to Lake Tahoe, where we stayed in other house there. He took me up and did a complete stunt flight in the P-51. At one point, we were eye level with the boaters and skiers on Lake Tahoe because we were flying right on top of the water. I almost blacked out due to the G’s we were pulling. Then we flew in his T-6 which is duel control and he let me fly it and do stunts and stall the plane to see if I could get us out of spinning out of control. It was awesome!
