Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaszlyn Gardner.
Jaszlyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It’s been a journey getting here. I have been sewing since I was 12, and I was ashamed so nobody knew. I use to always watch my grandmother sew and she was amazing. When I got into high school, I knew I wanted to start my own fashion company. I started out by making clothes. So as I was doing the clothes, I notice that it wasn’t my passion, because it’s so many people doing it. So I had to come up with another plan.
I figured that since I’m obsessed with handbag, I should design my own. So I started to do my research. I noticed how the Handbag industry is lacking new style. Every bag looks the same to me just a different name. That’s when my “Jalile Handbag Brand” come along. I have big dreams of becoming the best new Handbag designer and I won’t stop until I make it to the top.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I struggle for about 7 years to get too where I am. At first, I was doing clothes and was so stressed out. If I’m not mistaken, I had quit about 3 times. Threw away every from sketches to designs. My husband would always tell me”If that’s your passion then don’t quit just keep going. I thought really hard about it, then that’s when I realized I decided to do handbags instead.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jalile Handbags – what should we know?
I am starting my handbag company to bring a new style to the industry. My biggest dream was to start a manufacturing company in Houston so students (like me) can get more hands-on work in the fashion world.
My biggest proud moment is that I made it. I was so afraid to even do it because I didn’t want people making fun of me. I’m different because I have goals, I want to win awards, and keep doing what I love to do.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
You have to be motivated. I learn that I have to be more comfortable and confident. I have patience and the drive to go get it. The most important key is determination. I had to just do it, no matter what people say.
