Meet Jaycee Rose McKinzie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaycee Rose McKinzie.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My photography passion started as a young child. My granddaddy would follow us around with a camera and later as I got older he would sit on the couch and explain the different camera parts to me. My mother was a photojournalism teacher and photographer so as I became old enough I started shooting with her and tried to absorb everything I could, I still go to her when I need help. When she decided to retire, I started my photography business capturing mostly weddings, which I truly enjoy. My passion for photography however really stuck after I had my son. Yes, I enjoyed taking the dirty-faced, first smile shots, but the first time he caught the ball as a pitcher and threw someone out on first base and turned around to grin at me I was instantly hooked!

Please tell us about your art.
The main focus of my business is portrait photography. I cover weddings, events, senior photo shoots, and real estate. My main love of my business is sports photography! There is nothing that compares to capturing an athlete, especially a youth athlete who still plays the game for fun doing what they love to do. I love the instant reaction shown in a kids face when they see themselves in action. As a parent, I understand the feeling we all have of being proud of our children, but to have the chance to capture a moment and share it with them and see them recognize their awesomeness is truly amazing!

Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
In my field, I would have to say the easy access to quality cameras. Technology has progressed so much over the years that camera equipment has really advanced making it possible for anyone to take good photos. As an artist that is hard to compete with because it takes the true art form of photography out of the equation and people are settling for people with good cameras as opposed to an artist with a good eye and passion for what they do.
