Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmin Torres and Mayra Perez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As far as I could remember, I always felt the drive to become my own boss. At eight years old, I was selling bubble gum to make some change to play arcade games. I always spoke as if I will have my own business, I tried a few small start-ups but nothing solid or a brick & mortar before opening Homiez. Until Dec. 2017 over lunch with a long-time friend the conversation arise about opening a business together. That is when the idea of Homiez Vape and Smoke shop was born. Mayra and I have always referred to each other as “Homiez”, hence the name of the shop, with her background experience of 7+ in the smoke shop industry we decided to open Homiez Vape and Smoke Shop. After that day in December, we started working towards our goal to open the shop, we were determined, immediately acted up building a plan to work towards the opening of the store. We had our soft opening in April 2018.
With persistent and consistent work, we are organically growing. Continuing to learn about marketing and networking in the industry, socializing minds alike people has helped us grow along the way.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have been very blessed along the way to have been able to continue to operate daily and with all the support we have received from our family, partners, and friends our dream of homiez is possible today. There have been some struggles and we continue to encounter more struggles as we go along the way. I have a clear understanding that the reward is on the other side of the struggle. We embrace the struggle.
Homiez Smoke Shop – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Mayra and I are passionate about what we do, we care for our homiez (customers) and are always looking to provide them quality products as CBD. With the CBD being in high demand, there are several CBD manufacturers that are only cashing out on the people. Meaning their product is not as authentic as they claim by marketing more content of CBD than what the product actually has. Lab test has found some brand name CBD products that claim to be CBD products have zero grams of CBD and it is pure sugar instead (i.e., CBD gummies). We only work with long term established CBD manufacturers and go as far as sending samples to a 3rd lab for testing.
Our day gets brighten when we have a customer who has bought vaping products claiming it has helped them quit smoking or has helped to slow down on their smoking. We offer affordable vaping products for our customers to make vaping products more accessible.
Homiez Vape and Smoke shop have a wide variety of tattoo supplies, you can find everything you need to start a tattoo. Our customers vary from apprentices to professional tattoo artists.
Every 2nd Saturday of the month, Homiez hosts the East Side Market. All ages, curator market that offers the opportunity for small business to showcase their products and promotes local shopping. It is a market full of vendors, food, music, and kid-friendly. We have partnered up with an east side local business (Mar y Sol moonwalks) to provide fun for the kids. We love Houston and are happy to be able to give back to the community. What sets us apart from most is that we genuinely do care for our community and do the best we can to provide quality products at affordable prices.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success knowing what you want and working towards it. To me success is not necessarily financial success, I believe money comes after you are successful in doing what you want. My criteria for success would be a well-balanced life with work, relationships, family, self-love and social life.
